View Full Version : Build a better container

I want to build a new, better container for dry ice or even LN2 benching.
So i bought a thicker baseplate (1cm or ~0.4"). Will holes in the baseplate like shown in the pic improve the temps?

http://www.xtremeresources.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10696

I also know that you get better temps, when you put small metallballs into the container. I know where to get sinkerballs for fishing, but I think they are not as good as copper balls. But where to get some made out of copper?

Well im not expert at all but i know that the more mass it has, the more stable the temps will be. A thicker baseplate and more area inside will help too.

The more imperfect the base is the better, you want as much surface area on the base plate as possible.

Ok, thx for your help
btw: Nice avatar FUGGER :D

ya i think maybe drilling some holes in the base on the top side will help

also having a thicker base, i would think 1/2" to 3/4", and putting metal bb's

you could take a swiftech heatsink and braze a large tube on it :)

the mounting is allready in place, and lots of surface area. Also it is very easy to remove pins that aren neccesary

Today I had some time to build my new container. I only have to braze the tube and the base together, tomorrow.
But anybody knows how long I must heat up the copper approx, to get it "cherry red"? I have an oxygen/acetylene torch, I ask this, because there is not much gas left. I don't have any new bottles at home, damn :(

I have never created a CO2 container for my pooter, but I would start with a Bell Jar shape. I am real new to these forums, I have tried it in a lab, but I was just wondering if you solder the CO2 container shut, while still subliming, i.e. submerse the container (up to the level of co2 in the container) in co2, and solder it shut with oxyacetylene? kinda like a sealed thermos? ::

Aah I just thought your soldering job has to hold 5atms, ehhm thats quite alot ;) sorry !

Jus noob speak ;) My home is the VPC section :)

Sry for the lateness, but here it is

The container will see CPUs soon :D

that looks great.

nice, what's the diameter of tube an ddimensions of base? 5.1cm?

cold_ice

The diameter of the tube is 54mm, its 20cm high.
The base is 6 x 6 x 1cm (wanted to take 1.5cm, but dind't get it)

And here is a pic of the container w/ insulation

The baseplate covered with armaflex at the sides

very nice cold ice.........
looks very similar to mine :D
The "perfect" rig would be about 64mm diameter, with 64mm square base, 1.5cm thick, even 2cm for ln2.

thx mates :D
Yes especially the mounting is the same (you can see it in the background of the two last pictures)
Mine is not "perfect", but I hope I will get better load temps than my old container.

btw: Maybe I'll get a 3.2E D0 this week, this will be fun :D

Mr:Cold, these mounting kit u are using, does it working any good?

I didn't test it yet, but charlie and some other guys are using it. I think its one of the best mounting methods, because you dont have to drill holes into the baseplate, or even make a new container, when you get a new CPU with other socket.

Double insulation thickness, thats no.1

no.2 would be milling out the base so its more HSF like, a fast flashing liquid like LN2 wont stay in these holes.

I would use these dimentions for the "perfect" a64/fx container

3/8in copper

4in x 3.125in base

3in copper pipe 6-8in high .067in dia. wall for 3.125in outside dia. to mount the base perfectly ;)

also use the stock a64 back plate and becasue the mount holes are 3.5in apart you can mount with hex bolts so oyu have no long messy rods and can insulate perfectly..

and 3in pipe equals massive surface area :)

use crushed to "snow" dryice with acetone or ethonal :)

same as the one ORB has here

Hmmm, but i only see 2 Mounting "bolts" are these for A64,or just using 2 holes for ex s478 sA and mount it Diagonal?

//Gabbax You're right, I'm using only two holes diagonal :)

@Overclock Kid: Looks good
I'm using "snowy" dry ice too, its better to handle imho ;)

@eminem: thx :D
But you and evo are good with dry ice too

@berkut: thx for pointing that out

crushed dry ice performs better due to the larger surface area, as charlie has pointed out to me. I also prefer using Ethanol over anything else because it just gives me better temperatures.

yeah its just for A64

did you try stirring (or how's it called) the dry ice / ethanol mixture with a wodden spoon ?

Never tried that, but I can try it at the weekend
