USB or Internal Hardrives

Are USB 2.0 120 gig 8mb cache or 120 gig 8mb cache Internal hardrives faster?

I want to add some USB drives but I'm concerned that it will be too slow.

i have a usb external drive i use for onsite jobs... nice backup device but thats about it..
