Good review, EXCEPT!!! how about the comparo to the FX-53-940?? Is it worth it for peeps with FX-53(940)/SK8V/ECC3200 to upgrade to FX-53(939)/A8V/BH-5?????????????

I always liked Tech Report's reviews.

Then how can I buy a 3400+ from newegg for $416?

how is the a64 3800 scoring so high in mem bandwidth

It's dual channel. That's the whole point of S939...

Also, Charlie, from skimming several reviews with those kinda results in I'd say it's not worth it, unless you have the spare moolah burning a hole in your pocket :D

That's principally good price, I thought it's gonna be much worse...

After reading all the foreign S939 reviews in 7 different languages I can confidently translate an summarize them all:

"939 Kicks A**"

I thought that the 3800+ 2.2g 512 dual vs the 3700+ 1 meg single was about the same in games.

All A64s "Kick A**" Charlie. They are all fast and they all scale very well.

It's cool that AMD has a CPU that will smash the P4 in Sandra Mem benches, but I question the value of such a capability. I have built and benched almost every A64 CPU and MBD combo out there and I've observed the following:

1) With the exception of a few applications, memory bandwidth means very little to the A64 compared to CPU clock cycles.

2) FSB means nothing compared to CPU clocks.

3) Dual Channel means very little to the A64s.

4) HT running at higher than 3X means nothing.

Having a fast road does not necessarily mean fast cars are driving on it. Just like SATA drives. What good is having an interface capable of 100, 133 or 150 MBs/sec if your drive mechanics limit you to 50-60???

No, the value of these new CPUs is going to be the ability to clock them higher (assuming that is the case). Higher CPU clocks is what makes the difference. We know this, and it's why the new chips are so damn expensive!

EDIT:

jfr0

They are the same stock, perhaps even a little slow than the 3700+. As I said, the value will be increased OC'ing, unless it is discovered that they do not overclock well.

I want to see reviews done by overclockers, not stock benches. STOCK BENCHES ARE USELESS!!!

Very true, with 754 1meg cache might limit the ocage, while the dual channel ram might limit the oc on the 939. Still 939 should clock better we hope.

Possibly in three or more months after first launch, like in Socket 754's case.

If you were thinking of going FX, then this is probably the time. Saves you a few hundred by not having to get new ram. As far as memory bandwidth the FX's have very high buffered sandra as well, but do very poorly on unbuffered sandra. Not that will matter much, but I'll wait for the unbuffered scores.

The dual channel does seem to help in some tasks and its important to remember that the 3700+ has 1mb cache while the 3800+ has 512. It looks like the dual channle just makes up the difference overall.

what do you mean the 3700+ has 1mb cache?. Are you talking about socket 754?

Yes he's talking about scoket 754.

A64 overclocking's really got me confused, so the HTT/FSB speed doesn't mean that much? Is that why 250-300 HTT speeds are showing up more and more?

Don't get me wrong. Everything counts, but some things more than others.

Like the whole argument over RAM timings :D
