Well I got an old ac to build for a chiller and I was wondering where I should really go from here. My biggest worry right now if that the evaporator isn't getting cold...because I've had it on for 20 mins and no frost and still measures about 15.3C is there anything wrong or should I let it be on some more?

PICS!

How cold do you expect the evaporator to get when you have a big fan blowing warm air through it? Remove the evaporator fan blade.

IE remove the fan blowing on it?

Okay I removed the fan blades for the evaporator and the evap measures about -25C after a little time running, but if you look at pic 1 on the pics the pipe that goes in a circle gets heavy frost while running. Think I should insulate it?

Okay *bump* what are some good non-toxic coolants that are tolerant up to -40C and are no extremly expensive

I'f got with a methanol/water mix. I'm running 75/25 mix and have no problems. My chiller gets down to -37.2c. BTW my a/c looks very similar to yours.

Any finished pics of that?

I haven't updated it with the latest pics yet. The coolant holds at -20c with a XP-M 2500+ and a 9800Pro under load. With a 8500LE it holds at -27c.

to get those temps did you just place the evap in a res
did you require any tweaking to get those temps

have you a thread on the xtremeforums comments etc
or just that link you had in the above post?

kayl if your talking to me then yes all I did was put evap in a res. I did slightly pinch cap tube but that's all i did. Here's my thread (http://www.xtremeresources.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31957)

yeah sorry i ment iceman2g,
forgot to put the name in
cheers and well done, the airconditioners i had only got to about
-20 deg C, they needed longer captube and some feron removed but i didnt have the tools at the time to do it, with the airconditioner chillier do you get build up of deposits forming in the bottom of your res iceman2g and on the condensor?

this is the compressor I now use in my home made R290 chillier

what kind of pump you guys use most times?
http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/ex-pmp-10.html

think this one will cut it or does anyone know one that will that's about the same price?

i'd think it depends on how cold you get. I personally use a Via Aqua 1300. As for builds don't experience any of that. I did have forst on the bottom of the compressor as it was really cold (had too much freon), but like I said I pcihed the cap tube and it took care of that problem. It helped to lower my temps as well. I'm using a 18.5L/4.9Gal res.

my eheim 1048 works fine at -38ºC..... i wouldnt go mutch lower (arround -45ºC) with a pump like that........

Iceman, I have the exact same thing happening. Lots of frost forms on the compressor where the r22 exits any way to fix that?

i had the same problem, too... just tested it at load and when the ice was starting to form on the compressor, i kinked the cap.... when it started to form up again i did one more kink.... this until there was no ice forming on the compressor....... and after have done that, the temps improved a little (up to -38ºC)

if that doesnt work i suggest to let out some gas (only do those things under the cpu load to know if the cap is too restrictive or not for that heat load....)

I assume you mean pinched, not kinked?

i think i have the same air conditioner, i piked it up at schoool. I havnt tried it yet though. Is this a 1hp compressor? And would a 5200btu a/c be more efficient?

oc_nightmare what kinda loaded temps are you gettin.

havent tried with cpu load yet.... the mobo died when i was fitting the wb.....

yea my coolant hits about -35C haven't tested it in a computer yet as I need to get water cooling parts first...lol. Again though, can anyone explain how I can pinch the cap tube and maybe give me a pic of what it could look like when finished thanks

Well you only really wanna do that if you have too much refrigerant in your setup. I only did it because I didn't want to get piercing valve or change cap tube. If you do attempt it though your system should have a heatload.
