We are going to start a program of building dedicated Xtreme Folders from parts donated by members. These machines will then be hosted by selected members of Team Xtreme.

To get this program going I am donating an ASUS A7M266 and an ABIT KG7 for Xtreme1 and Xtreme2. Both boards are fully Vmodded by me. Hardass has generously agreed to donate a 1G Athlon and a 1.2G Athlon.

We need ram(128MB will do), HDD(1Gig up), NIC, display card(any will do), HSF, case and PSU.

If you are interested in hosting an Xtreme Folder, please post and let us know.

OK guys, let's pitch in and make this program a success.:D

Great idea!

I am pretty much out of parts right now..they are all either folding in one of my machines or have already been donated to others for folding. If you need a host, I still have room for several more machines before I run out of ports. I just added another 8 port switch.

:D

I have (1) 128MB stick of generic PC2100 & (1) 2.1GB Quantum HD I am willing to donate.

I may host (1) machine...I'm not sure if there is a big demand on hosting these, so if someone else wants to host, they certainly may, lol.

Ok well, I have (1) 1.6GB hdd, an extra floppy drive, several 13" monitors, several keyboards, a 235w psu, and several small pc133 sticks of ram. Also have quite a bit of cat5 cable w/ rj45 connectors.
I can host as many as the team wants, may have to add a hub to my router for internet.

Yes this is still going on, we just haven't built any new ones recently. Not sure if you're able to see this thread or not, but here (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4836) they are.

Ok well, you'll gain access to that forum after some time has passed and you've acheived more stats within the team. I would recommend before you start donating to this though that you concentrate on getting your own rig upgraded and then possibly donating those older parts to the program if you don't have any need for them after that. :)

Sorry for the newb question, but I have done extensive searching and still can't find the answer.........ummmm, what is folding? In every thread that surfaces concerning folding everyone speaks of it as if the word means something that everyone should intuitively have known from birth. My deductive guess is that is is something to do with linking computers up to collaboratively use their computing power to crunch numbers for some "higher" purpose....such as the SETI program or something.

Can someone please explain what folding means in the context that you are using it here? (obviously the standard dictionary definitions of the word do not appear to apply in this case.)

I have to ask what is folding??

I hope this answers your question...

What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.

What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

You might want to check out the folding@home forum we have here. If you need any help, just ask there and a number of people would be happy to help you.

Ahhh, yeah, thanks!

I see my deductive guess was very close...........using a network of computers to crunch numbrs for a "higher purpose." The higher purpose being researching how and why proteins "fold."

Cool.

I'm wondering...is this still going on? I mean where are the results from these XS computers? Some of the people who were involved are no long XS people. Do these rigs now go for XR? XS? both?

I've got a bunch of working bits that need homes (The GF says so... )

You want them? Range from P3 500's to 1G Athlon... might even have a DUT3C 1700 around. Lots of mobo's, cases etc... Oh, and a 16 port switch with 24v power adaptor.

If someone in the UK wants to Collect/pay postage, you're welcome.

Oh, my PC is not stable enough to fold either... But I'd still like to contribute.

Any Takers?

EDIT:-

Posted a month and a half ago, no takers.

Offer withrawn, will fleabay the lot
