I was thinking and the 1 gallon res I have it to small for my current evap coil (20') and my Eheim 1250. So I need a 2 gallon res which means longer pull down time and that makes me pull my hair our.

Is there an easy way to make an effective HX of some kind? If I were to make a two tube thing with 1/4" evap tube in some 1/2" tubing how much would I need for an effective setup? Anything over 10' would be a PITA to insulate without wraping it up into a large coil but how do you do that without kinking the 1/4" tube inside? Is there any other kind of HX you could easily make?

im in the same situation as u for my chiller, i think im gonna either fab a HX out of copper piping, or buy a preassembled one, because the whole res thing isnt sittin well with me.
if i could use a compact HX then i could fit the whole chiller inside the original housing of my AC unit, which isnt all that big, plus i think it would be more efficient

maybe i could mod the one at the bottom of this page http://www.rparts.com/Catalog/Major_Components/accumulators/accumulators.asp to become a HX

Did you see the "InnovAopen" work from a.p.versteeg?

I think you can get some good idea for a custom HX from there.

well it turns out the "1 gallon" cooler I had was actually 2 gallons. I picked up a 1 gallon water container insulated thing at target today and my coil fits great. This is like a HX res or something. Its small and theres no pump inside it but its not a tube in shell or whatever HX...
