All right guys in need a few answers so I can get out of lab quick.
These are true or false questions.

1)Only 2 devices at a time can use an i/o address ??

2)Every divice attached to a computer requires a DMA address?

3)An I/O address is a physical location on a hard drive where the CPU stores data?

4)All PC have 3 DMA channels?

5) An I/O address "resource conflict" occurs when two devices attempt to use the same I/O address?

I need the awnsers ASAP :D

Thanks Guys:D

1 - False
2 - False
3 - False
4 - True
5 - True if the devices aren't capable of sharing I/O.

Easiest solution, wipe and reinstall with ACPI disabled.

Are you sure ??

1 - False
2 - False - USB and Firewire devices dont use dma addresses - only the controller does :).
3 - False - an I/O address is a place in the RAM not the HDD :). An I/O Page is a place on the hdd.
4 - Not quite sure what you mean m8. DMA (or direct memory access) can as far as I know be allocated to any address in the memory range.
5 - True, but not limited only to I/O addresses. It can also extend to sharing various other stuff too. You can have resource conflicts on IRQs, I/O addresses, Memory ranges, the lot.

Hope I didnt get any wrong - been 5 years since I did my MCPs :p.

After a quick hunt, yes, I'm positive...
2 - DMA - soundcards are the main culprit for DMA requirements
4 - You only have DMA1, 2 & 3. So Everything requireing DMA has to share....

Next:

Descibe the difference between an I/O address and a direct memory access (DMA) channel?

Thanks,

Hmm. Dont remember learning anything like that all those years ago.

My guess whould be though that i/o addresses increase according to the amount of memory installed whereas you can only ever have 3 DMA channels.

6. Describe the difference between an I/O address and a DMA channel.

Answer: DMA is a chip that resides on the system board and provides channels that a device may use to send data directly to memory, bypassing the CPU. I/O addresses are numbers that are used by devices and the CPU to manage communication between them.

Good job guys:) Thanks.

I usually do all the work myself but these were the last 6 questions and I wasn't sure and I felt like getting out of there.

Anyway, I may have some more for you guys next Monday, we'll see:D
