View Full Version : 10 gigs of drive space, a gig of memory, for what?

Sometimes I sit and think about old games, and how good the programmers were to back what they did into such minimal resources. I just came acrossed THIS (http://www.theprodukkt.com) website, even you dial up folks can download this game! you've just got to check out what this fellow has acomplished in a 96K executeable. I'm quite impressed.. Hell the screenshots are bigger then his game!

Had a bit of a fool-around with it at work 2day...

I was using a Celeron 1.7Ghz, Gigabyte 8SQ800 Ultra, 2 x 256MB KHX3000 running at 4:6 (170/180Mhz me thinks @ 2-5-2-2), Sapphire 9600XT 256MB & 80GB hdd.

Man was it slow....

Not a bad game though for it's GIGANTIC 96kb size :D

Gonna give it a shot on a more powerful rig (read: P4, not Celeron) & 9800pro & see how smooth it gets...

Overall, kinda like Quake & similar FPS games...

For the price & size of the download, I give it a 8/10:D

amazing. how did they cram it all in there?

it runs like doom3 did on my old (dead) radeon 9700. fps in the teens on my current rig.

From another forum: the reason the game is so slow is because the code is optimized completely for compression, keeping the size as small as possible. The games that have fast FPS have code more optimized for speed [and taking up more space, and not using compression].

how much gameplay is in it? i played for about five minutes then its got pretty boring.

Because the game does it all through CPU math, and doesn't install all of the textures and everything pre-done on your system.

Yeah, it generates all the textures etc. on the fly, which is why the game runs smoother for those who are blessed with lots of lovely ram and a fast PC etc. :P

:D good achievement though :p

Hmm.. I heard about it... Are there even colours in that game???

Old games usually read from your CD-rom drive all the time so it didnt need to install alot of stuff... Eg. 700 MB CD only 300 would be installed.. Rest it would read from Cd-rom(Like starcraft does)

But all of doom1/2 and other old games probably have less pixels and polygons than 1 char in doom3/HL2... Thats probably 1 of reasons...

yeah there are colors.. It looks better than Unreal 2004 for christs sake.. for 96 KB thats REALLY GOOD. (seeing as that others have tried the same thing and created much larger games under 64 kb, but I'm not taking away any limelight)

blah blah.exe has generated an error and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program

awsome little game completed it in about 5 - 10 mins but looks good for its size ....but better than ut2k4? :stick:
