View Full Version : Best fan arrangement on radiators? (IE. sucking? blowing? both?)

So, I have a swifty watercooling system with a bunch of the 80mm radiators.

My question is....how do I arrange the fans on them? So the fan is between the radiator and the back of the case (sucking the air through the radiator - 'C')? So the radiator is between the fan and the back of the case (the fan is blowing air through the radiator - 'A')? Or, with a fan on each side of the radiator - 'B'?

Like so...

???

I would think the traditional 'pushing' would be the least efficient. Radiator fins are packed pretty tightly, and 80mm fans just don't do well with high back-pressure environments. OTOH, assuming the fans are identical makes and models....would TWO fans be best?

Thoughts?

if your stuck with 80mm fans then definatly push/pull I noticed a difference on my dual 120mm rad in push/pull versus just push.

push/pull is supposedly worse than just one pulling.

Interesting. I did post this on another forum, and the response there was 'pushing'.

So, I have:
Pushing - 1
Pulling - 1
Pushing+Pulling - 1

Riiiight....

Pulling with a good shroud that is at least 1 1/4" deep and a good seal to help with efficency and noise is my experience o be best. If you go with push/pull then you will need to have two deep shrouds to be effective.

How could push-pull me worse than the others? I just bought two panaflo 120mm MA1s for my push-pull setup on a BIX... I guess I will try it all ways to be sure.

Push/pull only is worse if you mount the fans directly to the rad or use very shallow shrouds. This will cause turbulence which will defeat the whole purpose.

If you use a decent shroud on both ends with matching fans you will see a definite increase in performance.

Okay, so if the case does not allow room for shrouds, and the fans MUST be mounted directly to the radiator....

'pull only' is best?

yes. pushing just creates turbulence.

Wow, this is good to know... so what should I do with this extra 120mm fan I have? haha
