i have been doing some work on my chiller and now its up and running w/o load;)
pics
frosty lol u can see that i touch the res :D at least i used my hand and not my tongue:slobber:

evap and res needs some cleaning :D

condensor

would my condensor lose some of its cooling power if i spary painted it

Nice system but can you say FUGLY! Its gigantic.... Try hunting down a smaller more compact condensor and put it behind the compressor with the res right infront. Also, why not submerse the pump?

water_cooler 20
04-08-2004, 07:47 AM
Yeah is is quite big lol i got kind of lazy when i put it together:D

the pump will be summersed its just not in the pic

lol i need to find my theromoniter;)

is this any better
http://server6.uploadit.org/files/watercooler20-DSC00528.JPG

I need a tube bender lol

also in the top pic sould my cap tube have frost on it

Looks a bit better :p:

How are you powering the fans? I need to know how to externally power them for my rad box...

water_cooler 20
04-08-2004, 09:26 AM
there runing from a old atx pc psu

but if u have window ac fans u can hook them up w/ the outlet feeding the compressor power

also i'm going to move the chiller on to a flat piece of wood so i will have more room

i still need to try it out w/ some water but i have to set up my res 1st

water_cooler 20
04-08-2004, 10:46 AM
i've done some work on the res so here is rev1.1 :D

water_cooler 20
04-09-2004, 04:15 AM
I have done even more work on my res

so here is rev1.2:D

1.I sealed the holes on the sides they would leck when i put the hose in so now the hose will come out the top

2.I remounted the pump

3.I made the evap removeable just in case;)

also in other news :D i think i'm going to paint my cooler to give it a niceer look(it needs it:D) and i'm not sure if i should use stright mathanol or mathanol/water

Damn thats an ugly beast :P

Looking good though, keep the work up.

water_cooler 20

i fixed my frozen cap tube problem by revaccuming it with a triple evac this time:D
now i have some stats
I used anti freeze and water but i got ice around the evap so i guess i have to go w/ methanol
but the liquid temp was somewere below -20C my cheap thermoniter only goes to -20C but since the liqiud in the thermoniter droped very fast to -20C i'm going to assume its below -20C:D

also is my acumulator suposed to get frosty or am i overcharging it

my low side was 1 inch
suction temp was -10C i think the frost made my thermoniter read warmer temps so it may be lower
hi side was 250 psi
discharge line was 60C

lol the cold temps made my poor thermoniter pop :owned:

Damn thats an ugly beast :P
:lol:its not what on the outside that counts its how cold it gets that counts

What is the condensor out of?

water_cooler 20
04-09-2004, 06:56 PM
i think its made out of copper not to beautiful huh so i think i will paint it soon but i'm still thinking on the color

note: Has any1 noticed i made a banner for my sig lol:D

I could be wrong, probably am, but to me the condensor look as if it was of some rusty steel/iron

water_cooler 20
04-10-2004, 06:35 AM
u might be right since i got it from a old frigue and had no idea what it was made of:D
but what works works
lol a few days after brazed on that condensor i got this one pic abelow and it looks nicer and probably would get the job done better but i don't like brazing lol to much work;)

but i'm still not sure if there sould be frost on the acumulator or not i'll get a pic of it soon

The tubes in a condenser need to be horizontal. The hot gas goes in the top tube and liquid comes out the bottom tube.

I think he is just showing it, not using it that way ;)

That thing is HUGE though... No way in hell would I use it.

water_cooler 20
04-10-2004, 08:02 AM
o ok so if i use it i will go lay it down flat
yep it is huge because its a car ac condensor lol its 14 in wide and 18 in tall
atlest i reached my goal of -20C :D
but i want to know how much colder it is do u guys know any cheap temp reader that would give me a close temp reading to the real temp:D

water_cooler 20
04-10-2004, 09:04 AM
i got new pics
overview i found out my sys works better when my condensor is laid down thanks for the advice gary
http://server6.uploadit.org/files/watercooler20-DSC00553.JPG
evap very frosty
http://server6.uploadit.org/files/watercooler20-DSC00551.JPG
acumulator is it suposed to get like this
http://server6.uploadit.org/files/watercooler20-DSC00557.JPG

also i closed some gaps in my inslation and now my suction line under the inslation is nice and dry:D

i found 1 clue to how cold it is 50:50 antifreeze and water freeze at -29C so now i know that i'm colder than -29C:D
sould i just use stright antifreeze or will that be to hard on my pump

also i think i really like this compressor lol it pulls down fast and it has a little hum to it but its not that bad

ps: its fun when the evap freezes lol i get to see my compressor pull a 5 inch vaccum lol and then i really see some frost the inslution on the suction line can't keep up when it gets that cold

in those last pics your condenser is wrong (will let someone else try and explain how it should go, i'll probably just confuse you), and its probably time to start insulating things :D

water_cooler 20
04-10-2004, 09:26 AM
i don't think i can insulat anything else:D
besides the acumulator but if i did then it wouldn't beable to do its job to make liqiud evaperate before it gets to the compressor

the condensor seams right the gas enter the top and leaves from the bottom

Gary Lloyd
04-10-2004, 09:59 AM
You should fill the res, covering as much of the evap as possible.

Gary Lloyd
04-10-2004, 10:03 AM
There is nothing wrong with a horizontal condenser as long as it gets good airflow and it isn't fighting gravity.

Gary Lloyd
04-10-2004, 10:36 AM
What is the high side pressure now? What is the air temp in the room?

water_cooler 20
04-10-2004, 11:22 AM
the hi side psi is 235 psi and the room temp is 27C

i'm going to go try again this time with a higher antifreeze and water ratio

wow after 2 hours of having my sys off there is still frost:D

Gary Lloyd
04-10-2004, 11:35 AM
Your condenser is working fair, but could be a little better. Do you have it raised off the floor so that air can get under it?

water_cooler 20
04-10-2004, 12:17 PM
no so i'll go do that

i put more antifreeze in so now i have not seen any ice and i filled the res up almost all the way
lol since my thermoniter is broken i can't see how cold it is:confused:
but if i stick my finger in the water my finger goes num for a few secs lol so i'm going to stop doing that:D

also now my hi side psi has droped to 202 psi

also as the water gets colder the accumulator gets more frosty so does that mean i'm overcharged

water_cooler 20
04-10-2004, 12:46 PM
i figure now that its cold why not try it out
here it is running w/ my maze 3 lets see if my inslation can keep up:D

water_cooler 20
04-10-2004, 03:26 PM
While running i noticed that the liquid was starting to slush and then i saw a piece of ice float to the top:mad: so now i have to go w/ a higher mix i think i was at a 30:70 mix so now i know i'm colder than -42C :D maybe i can hit -50C than i'll be really happy:D

Looiking good, keep it up.

Okay today i shall re wire my system hopefully :D:D.

1:I hope that isint plasticd mounting hardware
2:get a temp sensor that doesent suck :p:
3:what pump are you gona use for -50C?
4:you have almost no insulation on that thing :p:

water_cooler 20
04-10-2004, 04:11 PM
while playing w/ the charge i found out that it did have alittle extra gas because i took some out and now its colder and the accumulator is only half way frosted now

1.Yep thats plastic lol
2.lol i'm out of $$$ :D
3.i have no idea my via aqua i guess
4.yeah i need to re do it i underestimated how cold the liqiud would get

and if i get it to -50C that should out wieght its ugliness:D

what size and length copper tubing did you use to make that evaporator?
what size and length is the captubing?

water_cooler 20
04-13-2004, 05:59 PM
the tubing is 3/8 and i think its like 5 ft
the cap tube is 5ft of .036

i have a TEV but i think its rated for to high capacity then whats needed to cool water
on the box it says says capacity 3 so does that mean its rated for 3 tons:confused:

here is a pic

kommando
04-15-2004, 10:42 PM
How much did that cost btw?

water_cooler 20
04-16-2004, 03:04 AM
i got it off ebay for $20:D

Gary Lloyd
04-16-2004, 06:29 AM
3 tons = 36000 BTU = 10550 watts

I would say that's a little oversized for a 200-300 watt load. :D

afireinside
04-16-2004, 09:46 AM
Its not THAT oversized right ;)

lol i'm scared of my pumping cracking at such low temps:eek:

My plastic hold downs haven't failed me yet:D
