I have an external setup and i'm guessing about 5-6 feet of tubing.
ps. I want to run the pump submersed.

seems like #2 is only submersable and thats not entirly good or bad as being submersed it can add some heat to the water.

I emailed the guy at the store and he said it can be run either way.
i'm also guessing it'll be like this: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?siteid=6&pCatId=9849
is 40w too much heat to from a pump? is the mag 3 35w?

dont worry about the heat ...this pump is wayyy more powerful than the mag 3. and a little 5w more heat wont beat a load more flow.

I have ran a Rainbow LG Quiet One (yep the original bad@$$ pump) in my system for more than a year now and I have nothing but good things to say about it. It fricken amazes me that it can move the water it moves while still being almost totally silent.
pentair aquatics gets a big  for making the one I have.
on the other hand, I had 2 danners a while back - they both leaked and then died on me. more specifically, the mag 3 leaked like a bastage so I finally submersed it -- it shorted itself out after about a month.
I shall never lay my evil overclocking mitts upon another danner pump as long as the Quiet Ones are available.
the short version: buy #2. :D

hmmm. the rainbows that I have used were always very quiet.
on the other hand, danners have that damn impeller tick-tick-tick noise.
btw, you can get the quiet one for $10 less than the link posted above -- check with big al's
