View Full Version : *grrr* 2ghz just doesn't like me!

Right, i'm slowly gettin more n more pi**ed off here...

Over the past few months I've gone thru numerous hardware combinations, all of which i'll try n list below, but no matter what I have I CANNOT get 2Ghz out of it cpu-wise...
I like to keep to nice round numbers, so rig usually runs at 200x9.5 @ 1.9v = 1900Mhz

All I want is 200x10. Have tried at every voltage upto 2.2v.
Have tried at varying fsb / multi combinations (lower fsb higher multi, higher fsb lower multi) and EVERY attempt produces the same bloody results... post ok, hpt bios ok, pnp tables ok, booting os from hard-disc : immediate black screen. nothing happens. It has been this way on the following rigs (note EVERY rig has been able to run 200x9.5):

- Epox 8K3A+, XP2000+ Unlocked (1), 256Mb Samsung PC2700, Rad8500 64Mb. Maxtor 30Gb 5400rpm

- Abit KX7-333R Voltmodded, XP2000+ Unlocked (1) & (2), 256Mb Corsair XMS3200 C2.5, Maxtor 80Gb 7200rpm

- Epox 8K5A2+, XP2000+ Unlocked (2) & (3), 256Mb Corsair XMS3200 C2.5, Quantum 20Gb 5400rpm

- Epox 8K5A3+, XP2000+ Unlocked (3) & (4), 512Mb Corsair XMS3200C2-1T Platinum Edition, WD 8Mb Buffer 80Gb 7200rpm.

Top 3 rigs all with Rad8500, bottom rig with Ti4200. CPUs are numbered to show the amount of times I've given up on one cpu, moved it on and tried on another. All watercooled, temps perfect, rails perfect.

Could it just be that your average 2000 isn't capable of it as it's the only thing I haven't changed.... the CPU Model.

ah.. that happens to me too..

1900mhz stable at any multi/fsb config i use.. @ 1.85v..

AGOIA 0217 4

Same as you, the B**ch just dont like 2Ghz.. any thing above 1.85v doesnt help..

anyway.. im just aircooling.. 42ÂșC with a PAL8045.. maybe my temp is high so it doesnt want to pass from there..

Well this is at 30 degrees on core so temp doesn't affect it, and i've given it enuff volts to scare a lightbulb...

Anyways, started playing with the mem tweaks instead, and got meself as fast as I can with that at 206 fsb so far... the Epox bios literally doesn't have any faster settings other than the WPCRSET ones for the 8K3A+ but I've lost them **hint: someone please send me em again!**

This is Corsair 512Mb XMS3200 Cas 2 Platinum Edition, and it'll do it at 2.85v... looking to be some very nice ram. Haven't got the spreaders off it yet to id the chips... if I had a 1/6 divider I reckon it could go up to 220 or higher at ultra-aggressive timings...

Stupid question but.... did u try burn in the cpu....?

Don't feel bad, i can't keep this chip stable more than a hair past 1800. The best i can remember running was 1850 is h with a 1900+ and that was pelt cooled and volted to the hills.

Marci

I'd class running 24/7 for days on end at 200x9.5, 1.95v for daily use as burning it in meself.... so yes

Try even the Burn In Wizard that Sandra has, that could help too.

Have done m8... literally tried everything. It won't go.

Marci are you using the latest bios(8K3A2815.BIN)? Yor mem scores should be about 200 higher than that, are you using XP or win2k?
I had the same problem with my xp2000+, it did not matter how much juice I gave it its max was around low 1900MHz's.
This is mine at 200c2 2-6-2 1T the xms200c2.5 need 3v to get it :(

these are the wpcrset seting I use

Trev, yer a star... just what I was after... however that bios is for the 8K3A+ not the 8K5A3+

Am gonna try an XP1600+ and see if I can get that up there... and will implement those mem timings tonight...

8K3A2815.BIN
it is the 8k3a  version 2815

Marci

Trevor my man, you are now MORE than a star... after sticking on those WPCRSET settings as shown above in your post, guess what!!

200x10 @ 2.1v, 2-2-5-2-1T = 2Ghz!!!!!

SO, I heartily recommend all those with the same problem who are using an Epox board to use the settings above with WPCRSET as I've been chasing this speed for MONTHS and that has finally got me there....

Will leave it at 2.1v lookin at those temps.... should be fine... then drop l8r on in week after it's burnt in at that speed... which is odd, cos at 1.9Ghz the chip idled at 36 degrees.... temps seem to have dropped stack loads even tho I've gone up in both voltage & speed! RAM Benches still coming up in mid 2900s with the WCPRSET in place... will have a look into bios' that are available but now that i've got 2Ghz I don't wanna change anythin just incase I lose it!

Marci - word of warning. It looks like you have cpu idling enabled. You may find that you have increased stability while ACPI is idling the cpu, but as soon as full power kicks in it falls over.

Id say THOROUGHLY test it first. Try and do a few seti units (or folding if thats your weapon of choice) as well as some 3dmark loops for an hour or so and a sandra burn in for a couple of hours. Make sure its totally stable.

If it is then congrats :).

As an example, my old 1800+ could sit in windows and run sandra benches etc no problem at 1950mhz with cpu idling on, but as soon as anything intensive came up (3dmark) i had to back off to 1917mhz, and for long term stability (a few hours on end) had to go right back to 1860mhz.

Anyway, congrats on seeing 2ghz in windows :).

put it this way, it's just done a full 32 track mix in Cubase 5.1.1 with 4 inserts on first 8 channels, routing indepently to every output on card, which put the cpu under 92% load for 8.5 minutes without a single flake out.... NEVER have i got cubase to do that before! Can't get 3DMark to run full stop at mo do to a win installation :banana::banana::banana:up, but 10 loops of sandra and still ok.... got cpu temps down to 21 now which is best ever. voltage is up and down like a yoyo from 2.03 to 2.11v on this board...

lookin good.... will let ya know in a day or two if it stays solid

Discovered reason for temp drops....
It's just gotten very cold outside and my radiator is mounted on bare-concrete on the basement window-sill, which is open... I've had to put the fire on in the livin room cos my fingers were startin to go numb! Plus i also turned all my fans onto full whack from runnin at 50% power...

congrats marci i know how much getting there meant to you and the amount of effort you have put in to it :toast: time to get that monitor youve been promising yourself instead of the tv now and see it go in its full glory

very nice OC there. I wish I had water even tho My slk-800+70cfm fan does the job and keeps me at 2ghz..:)

Marci,

As Pilsy mentioned you have the halt command enabled. 95 /1E in XP does it. Temps also indicate this.

Apart from that good on you. Welcome to the AMD 2Ghz+ club!

:)

Marci

so if I take out that 95/1E register then halt disabled? Will do it tonight and HOPEFULLY I'll still have my 2Ghz... if not I'm gonna CRY!!

Think 92 also has to do w/ the halt-cooling. Either way, if its stable under load w/ the halt-cooling enabled, I'd leave it :)

That is if the halt-cooling is not messing with your sound(creating static, etc.) as it sometimes does ;)

It does seem to be running perfectly, altho without a monitor I can't put it thru 3DMark yet... which is gonna be the defining factor for me... neways, got one on order that'll be here by friday hopefully so I can get on with stuff then...

marci> can you run 3dmark at all? I mean just run it and not get to watch it? or does 3dmark refuse to run period??

Marci,

That's right it will disable halt..

92/E9 doesn't make a difference as far as halt is concerned on XP (temp don't drop). Neither does 92/EC?
I'm speaking for WXP though. The other aspect of having 95/1E setting is the impact of hard drive performance. Negatively. In as far as benches seem to indicate.

qwerty... windows boots at 800x600 and reports monitor's max support as 800x600, so 3DMark can't run at 1024 even without the TV Connected, however, my 17" Monitor arrived today so problems solved now...

Will disable that register lord and see what happens...

Thanks for all your help guys!

OK... brief update... gotta monitor now so can 3DMark BUT...

Tried running 3DMark, and locks before it even starts CAR LOW DETAIL... tried disabling all WPCREDIT settings, but no difference in temperature & 3DM still won't run. Reset to factory defaults, 133 bus, standard cas 2.5, STILL won't run.

Tried VIA 4in1437-42 and no difference (altho with 41's made it thru low detail then it locked on load screen for car high)

Tried Detonator 40.41 & 30.82... still same.

Any clues!? Figuring it's a dodgy win installation so will retry tomorrow after a wipe and reinstall...
