Does anyone know, how much voltage can one molex supply?
Definately enough to feed any single card available from now to few years future :stick:

I´ll bet my left *nut* for that NV40 retail version does not contain more than one molex power connector.

saaya
03-19-2004, 09:36 AM
one for the memory one for the vpu?

whats the recommended max Watts a molex should be loaded with? it has to be above that spec if they decided to give it 2 molex plugs.

i think this will be the first time we will see systems where the gpu consumes more power and produces more heat than the cpu

that cant be right! how many amps can a 16 AWG wire take?

although ati changed from a FDD molex to a HD one.... i wonder y.

EDIT: Ok i took my bench PSU, and a amp meter. measured how much amp a 16AWG wire could take at 12 volts. ummm well..... at 10 amps, it started smoking.....

WTF this beast must be consuming something around 5 amps then !! :slobber: :slobber:

how does the cooling look like on that thing!?

O it's the Inquirer.
Hmm and they just said this:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14749
Ah well it's The Inquirer, most of the time it's worthless what they say...

STEvil

Two?

Prescott vs. nV40.. who's gonna pull more power?

Gonna need a pair of FPS530's to run the both of them at this rate..

EDIT

You'd be surprized at the number of times the INQ is either close or on the money ;)

doctorcod
03-19-2004, 10:48 AM
I find that the INQ has been accurate on many things in the past. It's easy to discredit them when they get one or two things wrong, but on the whole i find them pretty accurate.

I agree.

And wow. If thats true...just wow..

enzoR
03-19-2004, 10:59 AM
well sometimes the numbers are a bit "overexagerated"they were wrong with the transistor count by 50 million for example, but most of the time they are right and i actually believe them it having 2 powerconnectors. only question is, for what??!

IvanAndreevich

Inquirer isn't going to lie. If they have seen the card, they've seen the card. They were right about Prescott ;)

saaya
03-19-2004, 11:06 AM
enzor, if one molex plug can take around 5amps max and the card has two of them then the power consumption must be ove 5amps!

enzoR
03-19-2004, 11:19 AM
yea, somewhere abit less than 10A CRAP!!! i wanna see how they cool this one

STEvil
03-19-2004, 11:23 AM
Just a thought here.

What about people who connect two molex's from the same "line" of their PSU?

And what if it also has a HDD hooked to it, or possibly two?

nVidia is asking for trouble..... although getting a video of a molex/"line" lighting on fire due to your video card would kick ass :D

enzoR
03-19-2004, 11:24 AM
assuming it draws 8A from the 12v line ( a somewhat realistic figure) then that means it uses 96W o power :slobber:

to pelt cool a vmoded overclocked sucker like this, we would need at the minimum a 172w pelt to get decent temps most probably!!!. i hope wblock makers start designing a 226watter block

berkut
03-19-2004, 11:27 AM
Hmm
Imaine what will happen when overclockers get that card- how about a separate PCP&C 510W for your VGA card ?

enzoR
03-19-2004, 11:28 AM
but wait a second. some cheap ass psus use 22awg wire. i am sure nvidia is just playing it safe and you could probably get away with using only 1 connector if you have a decent PSU? we would probably have to just wait and see

STEvil
03-19-2004, 11:30 AM
or maybe they come with an external 5v/12v PSU?

enzoR
03-19-2004, 11:34 AM
umm FYI, 22 AWG wire from a generic cheap ass PS 10A @ 12, it heavily realeses blue/black smoke, and after 1 minute the plastic turns black, and crusty. basically totally burnt. I left it on, and soon after, you could see the wire glowing, and tackkkk..... the wire burned though. :slobber:

it was fun doing it, hopefully this information is helpfull as i stunk up my whole garage :D

"requires" them? It may or may not. Obviously they dont have a final product in hand. Look at the Deltachrome reviews... they all have molex connectors and do not need them, the retail boards wont have them. My bet is that the retail NV40 will not have two.

if it isnt final....then it isnt final

Was that the one that had 4 GPU's? And was about 1½ FT long?

it won't have two power connectors when it is final, mark my words.

I think it sounds a bit unrealistic...

Not long ago we saw a card manufactored for using OpenGL apps. As i remember it had 4x R9700PRO GPUS's on it, and didn't require more than 1 molex :)

I'm quite sure i saw the card in this forum, just dont remember where exactly.

Maybe Nvidia is playing it safe...

relax guys, that was the old nv40 which has been cancelled. the new nv40 is gonna be 200+ million transistors, not 175m

2 molex connectors? It's gonna draw more than 5A?
Not very likely is it?

One final thing, contrary to previous speculation, we think that ‘NV40’ that will come to market may be what was originally planned, as NV45 is, we’re told, the PCI Express part.

saaya
03-20-2004, 08:25 AM
this is the old nv40, the one with 175m transistors that got cancelled because it was too slow. this one however only has one power plug, so nvidia must have worked some more time on the old n40, released a worked over version (the one with 2 power plugs the inq guys saw) and then dropped the project when they heard that r420 was a r3xx with 12 pipelines and focused all their work on the new nv40.

when you release a processor you usually have the same team working on the next gen version of the processor, and a new team working, more like preparing, the 2nd next generation of the processor.

so the same team that fcked up the nv3x design also fcked up the nv4x design so nvidia decided to go for the other design the other team was working on.

i sincerely doubt that. the theinquirer has already flip flopped on the subject. i guess we will have to wait and see.

Antialiasing in screenshots is 4X RGMS (Rotated Grid Multi-Sampling)

yeehaw, finally they move to a rotated grid rather then an ordered grid.

That's cool! So now all I have to do is wait for the NV40, because then my secondary PSU just for the video card (that I already have in my system), would finally pay off.:D
