What are your upgrade plans? Upgrade or start over?

I will be starting over and building a whole new rig from scratch. This rig in sig will remain unchanged and become my backup rig.


1. I want an a64 cpu at around 4GHz overclock on 90nm die
2. I want 3-3-3-8 ddr2 ram latency, no worse. I will run sync or async at a minimum of ddr500 speeds. If 250fsb, I run sync. If 310+ fsb I run 5:4
3. I will buy a good case from the computer show. Ill also splurge a bit on at least 500 watts major brand psu with clean, steady rails.
4. 16x dvd rom, 40x cd burner, both should be peanuts by then.
5. Very large hdd, perhaps 200 gigs, 7200rpm monster!
6. obviously gonna keep my broadband, dialup is torture now!
7. If agp is still supported, I will transfer my ti4200 to this rig and stick my other, slower ti4200 or ti500 in my backup rig, else ill be forced to get a pci-e card thats guaranteed to be faster than my ti4200 in both 3dmark and games, most likley from ati
8. I may get the full verson of longhorn, a 64 bit os.

Also, the 9500 in my 2.5ghz Soltek OCing rig is fine for now.

Also ... just ordered a $32 refurb "Purple Ray" Soltek board
and $35 case with 300w Sparkle PSU from NewEgg
to be used as a dedicated Folding rig. :D

planning on getting a good nforce 3 250 mobo this spring / early summer, and something like a 939 pin a64 3700+, depending on what's out and what they'll cost.

Already got a 9800xt and a 5900 ultra, but by that time I'll probably have moved on to nv40/r420. Will also need a new powersupply, so I'll probably go with a antec 550watt.

Might also need something to replace my xms3500, but I'll see when the time comes.

only got 120gb+60gb in my main pc and a 120gb in my xbox, but i have a couple of 120gb/160gb disks coming in from a friend, so I probably won't have to upgrade there for a while.

finally, it would be fun to go phase-change, but i'm actually saving up for a $2800 pair of used sonus faber cremona auditor speakers, so the vapor will have to wait :D

With threads like this I can certainly see why some average 7 posts a day. However, I must say this is a first. I've never seen a thread started about something 2 years out. For the life of me I don't see how this falls into the category of extreme overclocking. I can see xtreme forums looking more like the futuremark forums everyday. I can understand why I don't see gurus like Randi and others post here much anymore.

upgrade to current limitations of this chipset (875) then that should give me enough power till the new standards are in place and rdy for me to buy. Get like a 3.2 prescott a r420 or nv40 whichevers faster and wait it out.

What does this have to do with Xtreme Overclocking, other than dreaming of a 4ghz A64? Your far from being NEW to the forum, can't you please try to put stuff in more apropriate sections of the forum? Computer related open discussion would seem a bit more apriopriate.

As far as upgrading, I am not upgrading anything until PCI-Express is out and affordable, DDR-2 is actually worth upgrading to,and affordable, BTX availability is common ( I may convert my PSU to BTX (http://www.overclockers.com/tips1137/) )

And lastly Prescotts are in the D steppings or something better is available.

Until then, I am not upgrading one damn thing.:explode:

Some low latency RAM in 2x512mb (my BH5 is only 2x256mb)
nForce3 250 DC DDR AGP 8x Board
R9800XT 256mb DDR2 (on the way as we speak)
2x36Gb Raptors RAID0 (already have 1)

A little more "reasonable" than the topic starter's dream system....

Reasons: Initially, PCX and DDR2 will not be of any benefeit and this way is much cheaper for me and just as fast.

All the things with the exception of the 4ghz A64 are more or less available to you know for cheap. I mean I have CH-5 thats over a year old doing 11-2-2-2 @ 248fsb.

16x DVD = £20ish
40x CDRW = £20ish

almost no ch5 will do such insanely high fsb at those timings. Your ram sure sounds like bh5 to me. I paid $70 for my stick of ram that does 220fsb at 2-2-3-11 that isnt too bad though, my $200 mushkin didnt overclock any better but did 2-2-2-11 which only gained me a couple hundred marks. There is no need for DVD till they start making games on DVD disks instead of cd. cdrw isnt useful for me at this time. I am not gonna break 30k unless I win the lotto and buy a tank of liquid nitrogen to run thru my cpu and 9800xt gpu ;)


edit: your less than 1k marks ahead of me(16490 for me) and youve got a watercooled barton at much higher fsb too. Thats how hard 17k is and why ive given up, not worth the money for that. in 2 years 25k on a ti4200 should be quite easy and is what ill be getting then onwards to gaming :D

But mine does....and it reads CH-5 on the chips. I have two matched modules both twinmoss PC3200. On my NF7-S Ver 1.2 they wouldnt do above 220, but with this DFI and 3.2volts they do 248....and thats with CPC.

If you looked around you will find that quite alot of ppl are now starting to get high FSB + good timingswith Ch-5.

My watercooled barton is on basic water, no pelts or anything, with my old AX-7 I did ok as well.

DVDs can be used for other things other than just games ya know. They hold loads of data, plus there is the fun part of playing with movies!

Benchmarking is all about hard work, getting the most out of your system, if it was easy everyone would be doing it. Its making the best of what you have.

thats because your mobo was limiting you rather than the ram. I had to mod mine to get past 220fsb as well! and your old score is low, I am matching you on a tbred 200MHz slower than your barton. If I had your cpu id be easily over 17k for sure, maybe even 18k if I can find ram thatll do 240fsb and a cpu thatll do 2.64GHz. all air cooled but I havent the money and im done with 3dmark too

if I had your ram and a better overclocking tbred, id be at 17k. my 16490 was on just 229x10 and that was with my mushkin ram, wasnt stable either but managed to complete a few runs without crashing. 245x9.5=2.33GHz which isnt hard but I dont know if my cpu can still overclock that high anymore. id gain 80 marks with 40MHz more on the cpu and 320 marks for the 16 higher fsb. thats 400 marks more plus my ti4200 was not vmodded when I got 16490, its modded now. id be closer to 17100 actually at 245fsb but 17k for sure :) but im not spending $300 for ram and is anyone gonna sell their ram that does 240fsb at 2-2-2-11 timings cheap either? nope!
