View Full Version : DDR3 8GB sticks compatibility with S5520HC Dual LGA1366 Server Board question

I'm looking to upgrade my server and considering buying a used S5520HC Server Board, eBay link (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/322459081733?ul_noapp=true)
Currently I'm running a x5650 in my main machine (GA-X58A-UD7) with 6x 8GB sticks of dominator ram. (Ram cmp16gx3m2a1600c10 (http://www.corsair.com/en-eu/dominator-with-dhx-pro-connector-1-5v-16gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmp16gx3m2a1600c10))
I'm planning to upgrade my system and thinking of getting another x5650 and use the ram in my current system.
However I'm reading the MB is suppose to support only 4GB sticks of DDR3.
That being said, my x58 board isn't suppose to go up to 48GB of ram either, "supporting up to 24 GB" (GA-X58A-UD7-rev-1.0 Specs (http://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-X58A-UD7-rev-10#sp))
Hence i'm not sure if my ram will work in it.

I was wondering if anyone here has a system running with similar specs?

I Looked through the PDF, twice... not sure how it is helpful

Only RDIMMS and UDIMMS according to that sheet.

Intel's site says max ram is 192GB dependent on memory type and processor. https://ark.intel.com/products/36599/Intel-Server-Board-S5520HC

X5650 can support DDR3-800, DDR3-1066, DDR3-1333 up to 288GB. http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon%20X5650%20-%20AT80614004320AD%20(BX80614X5650).html

Honestly couldn't tell you if it will accept your desktop memory since it's not ECC. Won't run at their 1600 MHz speed.

This SuperMicro Board (http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/QPI/5500/X8DT6-F.cfm?IPMI=Y&SAS=N) will take up to 48GB Non-ECC memory so it would be a better shot at working albeit at 1333 MHz. And The Server Store has them for $59.99 (https://www.theserverstore.com/category/cpu-socket-lga-1366)

I thought the ram I had were UDIMM...
quick google comes up with
"UDIMM (unregistered memory) is a type of memory chip used mostly in desktop and laptop computers."
so how does my ram differ from what the UDIMM the spec sheet is specifying?

and thanks for helping me clarify this issue

I was referring to the Intel board which I've heard Intel boards being finicky with RAM among other things.

I think you'll be fine with a Super Micro board and your RAM.

I decided to go with dual LGA 2011,

So I ended getting ASRock EP2C602-4L/D16 (https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157350&_ga=2.125467977.217981742.1496367444-1121239558.1459918775) MB, should have it in a week or so.
Next to get are 2 ntel Xeon E5-2651 V2 (SR19K) 12 Core 1.80GHz (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-2651-V2-SR19K-12-Core-1-80GHz-30MB-L3Cache-Socket-LGA2011-CPU-/252942045891?hash=item3ae48552c3:g:HtcAAOSwTglYmir r)

What I'm not sure about is the RAM,
Will this ram work in this board?
64GB (4x 16GB) Hynix HMT42GR7BMR4C-G7 PC3-8500R DDR3 4Rx4 Server RAM Memory (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/64GB-4x-16GB-Hynix-HMT42GR7BMR4C-G7-PC3-8500R-DDR3-4Rx4-Server-RAM-Memory-/122513140655?fromMakeTrack=true)

specs from the MB site

Capacity
- 16x 240-pin DDR3 DIMM slots
- Support up to 512GB DDR3 R/LR DIMM ; 128GB ECC/non-ECC unbuffered UDIMM
Type
- Quad Channel DDR3 memory technology
- Supports DDR3 1866/1600/1333/1066 R/LR ECC and UDIMM
Voltage
- 1.5V, 1.35V

as for the ram, link to datasheet (http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=EP2C602-4L/D16#Specifications)

Part Number Density Organization Component Composition # of ranks
HMT42GR7BMR4C-G7/H9/PB 16GB 2Gx72 DDP 1Gx4(H5TQ4G43BMR)*36 4

what i don't know if number of ranks is an issue or if the ram just isn't right.
I'm hoping some one will help, since i already bought the MB.

Sorry for being late to the party, but did you ever get that sorted out?

If not, I can help you try and figure that stuff out because I just upgraded pretty much all my workhorse systems so I've learned a LOT from having done so.

Thanks.
