Bethesda has emerged victorious from its battle with Sony over allowing user-submitted game mods on the company's PlayStation 4 platform, confirming that support will be heading to Skyrim and Fallout 4 on the platform.

Mods, which change or expand the base experience and are usually written by fans simply for the love of the game, have long been a PC gaming exclusive. When Bethesda announced it would be bringing support for user-contributed mods to Skyrim and Fallout 4 on consoles, it was met with cheers; these, however, turned to boos when the Xbox One received mod support but the PlayStation 4 was left out in the cold. The issue, the company claimed, was with Sony, which was unwilling to let user-written code run on its console platform.

Now, it appears that Sony has relented. 'We?re excited to announce that mod support is coming to PlayStation 4 for both Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4,' said Bethesda in a recent blog post. 'Additionally, we?ll also be supporting the new PlayStation 4 Pro with both titles. Skyrim [Special Edition] will have these features when it launches on October 28. The new power of the PlayStation 4 Pro has allowed us to make Skyrim render in native 4k, and it looks better than ever.'

The Skyrim Special Edition re-release will be the first to get mod support, with Fallout 4 to follow. The support does, however, come with limitations: unlike mods running on the PC version of the games, which are free to build and bundle custom assets, PS4-based mods will be limited to reusing base assets already included with the game.
