Anyone know anything about Minuet?

I know it's small, and 100% assembly. But is it any good?
I'm looking for a stable, small, fast OS for a webserver and FTP server that I can use DynDNS for.

Would that fit the bill?

I'm not sure it will run dyndns, and it seems quite unsecure to me. I'd just run a linux server.

They can't even give direct answers to how it works. They answer questions like kind of, possibly and mabey.

I give it 2

Ok. Then do the following:

Find me a Linux server that will boot from floppy disk, and has a built-in FTP, HTTP, and email server.
All without consuming more than 10 MB on your disk.

Proof that programming in pure Assembly is the most efficient way to program.

Coyote Linux, http://www.coyotelinux.com/modules.php?name=Products&op=coyote - though you'll need a plug-in or two to get all that functionality.

Proof that you don't need assembly ;). Though, being an old f*rt that's done I86 assembly, Fortran, Pascal, C, Forth and C++, I like to think that a true assembly language developer will laugh at mere C.

How about drivers. Does it have drivers built-in?

I put the floppy in, press 6, 1, 1, and boom. OS works.
Got online, peered about, ran around in a maze..
And through all this, I had NO harddrives plugged in!

MenuetteOS is the SHIZNIT!

Drivers are built-in to Coyote. Like Minuet, the list isn't incredibly long but there's a nice choice of NIC's.

I used to run Coyote since I needed a router, had an old 486 box and no money. Coyote runs off a floppy and about 16M memory for best performance.

I agree with Smiz - No source, $50 fee to non U of Minn users, and a "trust us" kind of documentation.

Not to say it ain't da bomb, prolly works great - a lot of University sponsored software is really great.

...Huh?

It's open-source, free to all, and has as much documentation as any other open-source OS...

Are you sure your reading up on the right thing?

From ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.answers/minuet-faq

1.10 Do I have to pay a fee to use Minuet?

That depends. If you are a University of Minnesota student, staff or faculty
member then you may use Minuet free. If you are not affiliated with the
University of Minnesota, you will have to pay a $&50 shareware fee for
individuals. To register Minuet, send payment to:

Distributed Computing Services
Attn: Minuet Shareware
190 Shepherd Labs
University of Minnesota
Minneapolis, MN 55455

There are also site licenses available. For information contact

software@boombox.micro.umn.edu

That's the first related link coming out of a google search for "Minuet". You sure it's free?

Ahh, Menuet, not Minuet. Will check it out as time permits. Thanks!

Menuet is very cool, but I don't know about actually using it for something...

You're planning to run an ftp/web server on such low specs?? And, why?

Lemme think.

I could get a huge-ass OS, like SuSe Linux, and consume 9+ GB of my harddrive...

Or I could use an OS that only takes 1.4 MB, and have 9 GB more to put webpages and files on.

Hard one to figure out. XD

What's hard to figure out is that if you're that pickey, you could buy a 2 gig hard drive for a few bones to run your os. (linux takes 9 gigs my ass)

Most likely someone here could give you one.

Then you'd have stability, security, and the knowledge to work with it.
But whatever dude.

It'd be easier to use Menuet, though, and not waste an IDE slot for a dink-drive. =3

Hey, I got enough dink drives. XD

My 'server' (I use the term loosely... really loosely) has:
A 1.9 GB HDD (Primary Master)
A 2.1 GB HDD (Primary Slave)
A 520 MB HDD (Secondary Master)
A 240 MB HDD (Secondary Slave)

And my main PC has:
Raptor 30 GB (SATA1)
12 GB Quantum Bigfoot HDD (Primary Master)
52x CD-ROM (Secondary Master)
4x4x24 CD-RW (Secondary Slave)

So with my array of dink-drives, I could use the extra space. XD
