Hi,

I would like to attach a dual/wide port capable SAS SSD to an LSI 9207 8i HBA in dual/wide port mode. Can anyone point me in the direction of the right cable to use?

I think I may need 2 x SFF 8087 to 1 x SFF 8482 (if such a thing exists) or is it 1 x SFF 8087 to 1 or 2 x SFF 8482 (with the correct 2 port wiring into the SFF 8482).

I thank you in anticipation of your kind assistance.

No comment for the reviewer that doesn't know how to test his samples. A little over your head maybe?

:) Steady Highend'...

Being prepared to admit that one doesn't know something is perhaps a sign of honesty rather than incompetence.

I know how to attach dual/wide port to our test bench (which, by the way, is via one of these http://www.serialcables.com/largeview.asp?cat=259&tier=255&id=1252 ) - what I don't know is how to attach to my Windows desktop's HBA (LSI 9207-8i) in dual port mode and more specifically which cable I need - I asked the question here as I thought it is one of the few places I might get an answer.

In my googling efforts so far I came across Computurd asking a similar question - so maybe not knowing something is a common sin :)

Do you know the answer to my question Highend' - I would sincerely appreciate an answer.

I have also sent a support request to LSI - perhaps they will know.

That cable won't help you at all. You need a special cable that is somewhat rare and somewhat expensive when you find it. There are only a couple of drives in the world that even use the technology.

I live in my own private data center. :)

I am for, very good reasons, confident that the cable I pointed to works with our enterprise test bench.

Oh and this drive - http://www.smartstoragesys.com/products/optimus_ssd.asp supports dual/wide and this drive - http://ocz.com/enterprise/talos-2-sas-ssd/cs-specifications does.

So, these are the couple of drives then :) or am I missing something.

Normally, I think you need a dual ported backplane. The dual ported backplane will usually have one MiniSAS for the primary and a second for the secondary.

I did find this during a quick search...it looks like it may meet your testing needs...;)

This article appears to give a clue (towards the bottom) - http://sqlserverio.com/2011/05/23/pliant-technology-enterprise-flash-drives-for-your-sql-server-part-1/.

It seems I do need to get an internal mini sas (SFF8087) to 2 x SFF8482 (where each SFF8482 is double wired). Trouble is all the SFF8087 options available seem to fan out to 4 x SFF8482.

This is the response from LSI -

customer will have to purchase an enclosure that support the drive

Something an old boss of mine said to an IBM salesman - the specificity of my question has been lost in the generality of your answer - comes to mind.

Just get that cable and an external SAS to internal SAS adapter. I looked for the proper internal cable and didn't find any. I have some and Computurd has some but now that they are extremely rare now it seems.

Hi,

Here's what I believe is the best solution to my problem - http://serialcables.com/largeview.asp?cat=262&tier=255&id=131

Attach a dual port drive to one of these and then you can use a relatively inexpensive generic SFF8087 fan out to attach to an appropriate HBA.

Credit for this must go to one of my industry mentors.

Nice find. I haven't had to find dual ported cables for a couple of years, when I bought mine they were few and far between. Drives this expensive are usually used in enclosures with proper backplanes I guess.
