They have this new "Platinum" 3500 on there site here. (http://www.geilusa.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=11)

Says it uses 4.5ns chips, whereas their regular 3500 uses 5ns. Yet its rated for the same timings @ 3500 speeds (2.5 6-3-3 2T) but its saying the Platinum takes up to 3.1v to reach its rated speed, whereas the regular only takes up to 3.0v to reach its rated speed. What's up with that? What am i missin? :)

not to mention that 4.5ns chips should run 222MHz @ default voltage......ain't?

Sounds kinda fishy, my guess would be wait for a reviewer to rip the heatspreaders off and give a verdict.

Looks like they have swithed to Samsung ddrr400 modules as they are the only ones on sale that are rated at 4.5ns

man, 4.5ns and can only pull 216MHz(PC3500) Cas2 @ as much as 3.1v? eek :(

and i thought Geil was producing their own chips anyway? no?

uhh yeah right... they like to give it their own name maybe, but a small shady company definately doesnt have any resources to actually produce their own chips... not to mention good chips rated at 5 ns or less

JCviggen,

My thoughts exactly...can you say OCZ?
:D

lol, OCZ is what I thought when I first saw them as well.....but I thought OPP was praising these DIMM's ?

docah

Whether or not they are on the OCZ truck doesen't really matter as long as the dimm's perform right? Well that's the way i see it. So someone with experience speak up... tell us what these dimm's do and don't do! I want one bad ... i'm one click away from getting one on newegg.com

docah,

I agree...I don't care where it comes from if it performs, but I got burned on OCZ and am leary of getting burned again. Good thing is..if you get from Newegg and leave the spreaders intact...you can return it if it does not perform. Thank God, I got my OCZ there and when I called to return it, I told them the truth...that it did not perform as expected. They listed it as defective and issued a full refund because they did not have the Mushkin I wanted.
I have 3 badges on my case..1st one is a big pimp add for Xtreme..2nd one is Abit...and third is Newegg!

My next system is gonna cost me money that I really should not be spending right now. I'm gonna try my hand at 3D marks and want all the best hardware. I will wait until someone else that I trust reviews this stuff. I was not aware that OPP has given an opinion yet....but if he says it's the best, that will be all I need to know. I don't know what he has used but will ask.

Hehe,
I don't think he'll say its the best...but I surely remember a thread where someone knocked it, and he said it was good stuff, not junk.

I believe OPP tested their ram using relaxed timings on an Intel system and achieved the highest FSB overclock and Sandra memory benchmark he's done until now. He did not get to test it on an AMD system with aggressive timings. That's exactly what he told me.:)

Great .... thanks for that info DDTUNG:D

I had very similar results to OPP on my intel with the same board as OPP. I had to run the SPD values but I still was able to run 482mhz. So overall the RAM ran its rated speeds without any problems and ended up going 50mhz over. On my AMD rig with the SPD values it ran fine up to 205 or 210 but this wasn't that impressive. When I tried maxed timings I couldn't run at 166 oddly enough.

Thanks Chong for the AMD test results.

So there you have it folks. Isn't Xtreme great?

Yes indeed....got my answer within minutes...how often do you see that on other forums? Thanks chong:D

No problem. I would like to do some further testing though cause I didn't really try to single out the one timing that was causing the instabilities. I didn't really feel like it considering it wouldn't run at 2-2-5-2 1t on the KX-7 regardless of voltage. I guess its just really picky about what timings it uses. Also I would like to note at one time Geil did use 6ns chips. Then they switched the 3500 modules over to 5ns. Now they offer the 4.5ns ram which I'm supposed to recieve to review soon. I'll let you guys know how it does.

Thx DDTUNG and Chong for the quick replies :)

Soooo....can't say I'm too impressed w/ the stuff...being and AMD rig owner ;)

Yeah, I dunno what it was but it just couldn't do the maxed timings at 166 or above so I really didn't care to test further. On the intel it was blazing fast but on the old KX-7 it just couldn't cut it. I do have some other interesting RAM at the moment though. I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully it will do well on my KX-7 but I get tear issues at 210 so I won't be able to go too far. ;)

Well if it can't do over 166 with fast timings i'm not touching it. My crucial @ 2.85v can do 170 cas 2, 2-5-2 and i got that with my first ddr motherboard, the kg7-lite.

Yep, hard for me to justify purchasing any of the modules over PC2700 as my Samsung CTL does 200FSB+ w/ most aggressive timings on my AMD rig, and I haven't seen much top that!(at a reasonable price, anyway) :)

OPP showed me one of his old sticks of OCZ PC3000, which they released well before anyone else. Geil and OCZ RAM both tend to exhibit the same characteristics. They will overclock high but on relaxed timings. If my memory serves me right, according to OPP, his old OCZ sticks couldn't run 4-way on his AMD boards at default FSB.

So I guess if you're going to recommend this memory, it's best to use in a more lax Intel setup versus an aggressive AMD one.

Just thought I,d let you know that I bought a stick of 256/OCZ pc3200 and I' RMA'ed it back to OCZ TWO TIMES, and I'm now Waiting for them to send me a THIRD stick to see if IT won't allow me to BOOT!

BTW: bought a stick of Mushkin 256/pc3200 and no problems!

I've been using the GEIL 3500 and had no probles till reciently. it ran at max timings on my 8iexp (intel) to 171 FSB (cpu limit in a hot room) but yesterday it crapped out while playing warcraft 3. looks like I finally popped the memory, and it was still at stock voltage. my chaintech gear should be here today and start with a new board with a better mem setup....

Thats interesting. My stick is still running strong. I dunno about how their new Plat. Series performs but I do want a stick to review.

You guys might wanna check out this thread (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17706) here before ordering any Geil. I would be a little leary to say the least. Just thought I'd give ya the heads up:)

Edit, nevermind, just realized the dates, apparently this thread has been revived for whatever reason by Chriviper with a more than generous comment expressing his inner feelings.
