SSD controllers have become strong/resilient.. is it still recommended to NOT use SSDs in an OS that doesn't do TRIM?

I want to put a SSD a server of mine, it runs Windows Server 2008 (x86) - which is Vista based. Vista doesn't have TRIM, so neither does WS08. :shakes:

Or is there any other software solution to getting the TRIM command passed along periodically & automatically?

I've made up my mind that if I do put in a SSD into the server, it'll be from Intel, seeing as how reliable they are!

If you don't have TRIM then I would suggest something with a Marvell controller since they have aggressive garbage collection. SF drives have GC but only when you get to a certain % of the drive full. No one says where they put their trigger but most that I've seen seem to be at the 70% mark. Some times you can see it kick on when running HD Tune Pro, there is a dip in performance when it's activated.

Just underpartition the drives, so

for 60/64 gig drives, partition only 50gig
for 120/128 gig drives, partition only 100gig
for 240/256 gig drives, partition only 200gig

This will give the garbage collection a much better chance to work without working TRIM.
