I'm building a comp for my boss and I chose the shuttle mini box with A64 board and a athlon 3200 processor. For the money is this a good setup. I haven't been in the computer realm since last summer before the a64 even came out. ppls give me some oppinions. I want my boss to be happy with his system and it was I who suggested a64 over p4. I want to come out on top. If u think p4 will be better than let me know. This machine will see a lot of AutoCAD applications.

One more thing. boss wants 2gb of memory. Is that necessary i always thought 1gb is enough. Also whats a good speed for the mem to use on A64. I don't even know how to oc these chips.

Are these systems dual channel.its the nf3 150 socket 754? What memory should I buy? ecc registered or regular non-ecc? Not much of a choice in 1gb sticks :( and they are damn expensive

Socket 754 (ie. A64 3200+ & 3000+) are single channel. Memory controller is onboard the CPU so the CPU decides whether or not it's dual channel ....not the chipset. s754 use regular DDR memory. the A 64 FX series use registered DDR.

I think you should go with a P4C :)

thanx for the suggestion.. so u think a p4c 3.2 512kb would outperform the athlon64? Its a tough choice since price wise they are the same

if he wants 2 gig of memory then i would go with a p4c just because there not as picky about ram and timings

I found this EDGE 1gb pc3200 memory and it said built for intel 875p i wonder if it would work well with the athlon. Also is 9800p 256mb a waste for autocad applications? It has to last a while thoug.

What is a good chipset for intel. I'm looking into the shuttle barebones boxes.

You should be fine.

If I was building for my boss, I'd go P4C too. Less chance of problems.

hmmm....then again, I don't have a boss:)

I just took on the responsibility of spending $2k that was not mine. You shouldn't be scaring me like that!!!! LOL.

I figured the 64 will do better in an office environment. There will be a lot of CAD drawings going through this machine so it has to hold its own. I just hope that memory works fine. I'v never used EDGE memory and I have never held a stick of 1gb either :)

Any suggestions on setting up the a64. A quick explanation on how it derives its speed would be great. I heard about them failing so let me know what I should watch out for. It sux that the shuttle mini case will have §§§§ty cooling. I hope the 9800 will survive in there heat and power wise.

LOL...I'm sure that set up will work just fine:) Plenty of folks here to get you squared away with the 64.

The only thing I have to comment on is the memory, these Shuttle A64 boards seem to be very picky about memory. If you start to have problems, try running one stick instead. Besides that, you should be fine,

That system should work fine for a non-overclocked rig.

How about something like this?

1 x Tyan Thunder K8W
2 x AMD Operton 246 2.0 Ghz Processors
4 x Corsair PC2700 Reg. ECC 1 Gig sticks
1 x Nvidia Quadro FX 3000 256 Meg Professional Video Card
1 x Adaptec U320 SCSI RAID PCI-X 133 card with Intel 64 bit RISC Controller
4 x Seagate Cheetah 15,000 RPM SCSI Hard Drives in RAID 0 (Striped)

...wow it's so easy to spend money that I don't have :p: :D
