My current system, built 4 years ago, has a Q6600 @ 2.9 GHz on an BadAxe 2. It started to randomly reboot. I thought the motherboard was gone bad.

So, I ordered an i5 2450P 3.2 GHz, Corsair DDR3 4GB RAM, an Intel H67 board and a Seasonic PSU to completely upgrade it.

Well, it turns out that the Zalman PSU of the Q6600 system was gone bad. Now with the new Seasonic PSU, the Q6600 works like it used to.

Now I have a dilemma - Should I return those new components? Or, should I go ahead and upgrade my 4 year old system?

I'm perfectly fine with the performance of the Q6600 system although I don't mind performance boost.

I'll eventually upgrade the Q6600 system in the future. What I'm not sure is whether upgrading it now with those comoenents would be worth my time and effort.

What do you think?

stop wasting your time, sell the old parts and never look back...

I agree. Keep the new system, you'll be VERY happy with it. As for the old parts, buy a semi-cheapo PSU and case and keep it for a backup or part it out and sell it.

If you just have gigabit LAN on that H67 it is worth it alone - nevermind I guess the D975XBX2 has Gigabit.

Yes it is worth it.

Going from Conroe to Wolfdale was a noticeable difference.
Going from Wolfdale to Sandy Bridge was a tremendous difference.
Too bad you are not overclocking SB though.

As said above, buy a cheap box/psu and use it for a backup pc.
DDR2 is already pricier and harder to find than DDR3.

I'll upgrade. Since I already have two backup PCs, I'll just sell the Q6600, BadAxe 2 & Corsair DDR2 4GB. That'll make the total upgrade cost around $100 or so.

the power savings alone make it worth it

go for a non H67 board ( ram limited at 1333Mhz )
