Hi!

I want to build an older computer for some nostalgic bf2 gaming :))

Was thinking of getting like 2 6800ultras or gts, an asus sli mobo s939, amd x2 3800+ or something like that and 2gb of memory.

And run windows xp i think is best?

How would 6800s perform in sli in bf2?

Ha I recently started to try to get the coppermine in my old inspiron 8000 up to 1.33ghz. By software I can only go to 1.2ghz (+20%), which is stable at stock voltage and temps up to 95C. 1.33 seems doable but requires a difficult PLL hardmod, and after hardmodding the PLL I can set a 5%, 10%, and 20% OC via software.

The best part about messing around with old hardware is that if you break it, you don't lose anything of value since it's all old crap anyway.

At OP:

From my experience, playing with old hardware is only fun if you end up doing stuff with it that it was never designed for. If I were you I'd do some pretty big voltage and cooling mods to the CPU and GPUs. Go well over safe voltages since who cares if it dies anyway. I like the graphics card choice since you have SM3, which basically every new game still has a codepath for. It would be interesting to see how modern games run on 2004 hardware. Overclocked 6800Us in SLI is probably equal to an HD3000 in most cases, so basically all modern games should be playable on low to medium settings. Unfortunately I do not know how BF2 will perform.

what about some 7800 they are cheaper. on the 6800 the gt could be moded alot so if u are looking for fun i would go there, or the 850xt pe in xfire with the external dvi bridge for some throwback to the best of that get if u could make it work.

Yeah 7800 to 7900 GTX would be better. And it was on par with the socket 939 age-wise

6800 Ultra was way cooler than the 7800 GTX.

And X850 xt pe would be win.

How bout one GTX 680 instead, which would smoke either. Sorry, couldn't resist. The model numbers are so close, yet SO far.

6800GT and Ultra were separated only by clockspeeds. Originally they both had the same PCB. Later on, the Ultra got a different one, which i've not had a play with. I think it was introduced for the ZOMG expensive 512MB cards, but there are 256MB cards with that layout too.

Not wonderful overclockers though- about 20% in the core.

I had an AGP version of the Ultra. Water cooled. Using Nibtor to modify voltage vids I got a max stable core speed of 500 mhz.
Great card, loved it.

I would go with one of those instead of an SLI setup considering your going to have to use legacy drivers for SLI
