So, this head mounted display (HMD) was announced several months ago (http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201108/11-097E/), but it should be available within days/weeks.
My pre-order is in. I'm planning to use it primarily for 3D gaming...I'll report my impressions here.
Is anyone else planning to get one?

update 1 - I received my unit yesterday....here is my disassembly video :D

That's what she said? Lulz

It looks very cool, and the resolution should be awesome. I could (personally) see using this to play flight sims or maybe piloting in BF games. But otherwise there's times I do have to look down at the keyboard, especially for Fn keys, that I wouldn't be able to with this. Movie watching should be pretty awesome too!

I was also looking at this:
http://www.vuzix.com/consumer/products_wrap_1200vr.html#specifications
Smaller, lighter, same resolution, less expensive. Could be seen in public with them on :P
But the advantage with yours is its more of a personal home entertainment system; better sound and the picture should be amazing with the OLED vs. the LCDs in the Vuzix one. Let us know how it works out!

The Vuzix is lower resolution ;)

Twin high-resolution 852 x 480 LCD displays

The other big difference point people are mentioning is that the field of view (FOV) is about 30° on the Luzix and 45° on the Sony....a big difference
There are other differences too, but those are the major points.

It looks great, and since resolution is smaller than a 24" monitor, computer performance will be better.
I'd like to buy one, perhaps when (if) it becomes mainstream...

So, ABT say they shipped my unit on November 24th....but I'm STILL waiting

In the meantime, I've been watching intently the user experiences of other owners, and nearly everyone posting so far raves about picture, 3D, black levels etc.....but complains about fitment and comfort. Opinions vary about the sound quality from the built in headphones. I already know I'm not going to be happy with them, especially using these for gaming as I use a headset with a boom-mic for multi-player gaming.

One guy over at AVS Forum has completely disassembled it (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=21300282#post21300282) and it got me thinking about modifications to fix potential comfort/audio problems. I envisioned gutting the internals and coming up with a way to mount the internals onto my headset......but the same guy already stole my thunder....

So, my wait continues, but I'm definitely brainstoming the perfect solution for gaming with this device :D

Oh, BTW - I also ordered TrackIR to increase immersion x10

How much did it cost?

A lot less that the 3D Vision surround setup I was planning on :p:

:google: (http://www.google.com/search?q=HMZ-T1&rls=com.microsoft:*&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1)

BTW - it arrived and I'm playing with it already :)

I'd like to hear about your impressions of it. At $800, it's an expensive toy. Do you see it being genuinely useful on a continual basis, or is it more of a "wow, that's new and exciting" fun that will wear off quickly in your opinion?

The verdict is out until I can wear it comfortably. I'm waiting for parts to continue modifying it for better comfort. Out of the box it seems 90% of the contributors at the AVSFroum thread are not finding a good fit, and it was the same for me. I could not even put it one right out of the box cause apparently I have a huge forehead. After removing the forehead pad I could wear it for about 30 minutes before getting a headache.

If I can get a comfortable fit, I think it will be great, the picture quality is suberb, the black levels are amazing, and the 3D immersion is pheonominal

Well, I'm sad to say I gave up on the HMZ-T1....despite all my efforts, I was never able to get it comfortable.

To replace it, I just got an Acer H5360 setup on a homemade 100" blackout cloth screen (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1387957)....very happy with the results, especially in 3D

Here's a couple shots ;)

Here, I've fitted the screen into the window sill. The screen is 100" diagonal, and the projected image is about 98", the black boarder around the edges blocks light out from the window behind and improves perceived contrast ratios. The whole things fits like a glove, and looks very nice for about $80 total :D (Plus the projector was only a hair over $500....so I'm in for about $600 + $130 for the 3D Vision 2 kit).
