Hi guys

Here's a little sneak preview of my new cpu block.
More pics and details coming soon ...

Doesn't look like there's a whole lot of surface area for the water.

Is this designed around very high flow rates?

Well done you could teach a manufacturer or two a lesson if that's a home build :)

well done ...

Thanks for all the comments guys,

@Mudgey, the copper was bead blasted giving it the rough look, the top is smoked lexan

@ohms, no performance # yet until the fins are machined. As is the block would have 0 GPM flow :)

Here is the jet plate that I think will work best with the fin design.
Over the weekend I will hopefully get the fins done

That is beautiful. Can't wait to see the finished product. :up:

One question. Socket compatibility?

After some mind numbing dremel work the fins are half way done.

29 fins @ 1.5mm tall and 0.25mm wide

Did you do that with jig of some kind or purely by hand?

wow..I assumed you did that with cnc and now you mention dremel...dang.
My hat is off to you!! amazing.

Homemade stuff rocks, and even more when it's done with such skill.

With a dremel you are able to get 250 micron channels! That must have been a very good jig to fixture the dremel in. That is one clean cutting of the micro channels. What is the thickness of the base of the WB to the bottom of the cut channels? The better performance is 0.8mm to 1.5mm max.

CoolIT, IBM and others have patents on micro-channel WBs. I've spent time reading a bunch of them. You should be fine long as this is for personal use. :)

Shtrafenhoofen, what model CPU is this piece of art going on? Also, let us know some details about your dremel setup.

Oh to bmaverick, Bart will always be the cooler brother cause he got Sam and with the exception of Shaddy Acres, he always came up with the better cons. :p:

btw, it's worth to make base a bit bowed, for extra pressure/better contact in middle, above core beneath IHS plate. It's hard to tell from pics how thick is base, hopefully not too much.

Shtrafenhoofen
09-24-2011, 09:46 AM
Finally the base is done with a total of 59 grooves in a 34 x 34 mm area.
The cutoff blade was getting pretty dull so machining was starting to suffer on the second half of the base. My previous block was done using the same blade so I guess I got my moneys worth :)

@churchy
The jet plate contacts the surface of the fins a bit before the outer ring compresses causing a slight bow in the base.
The base is 2.8 mm thick while the grooves are around 1.4 ish.
If I have enough clearance I will remove 0.5 mm off the base to get the fins closer to the ihs

@ Captain_Harlock
The block is going on my i7 920 to replace my old block I made a while ago. As far as the dremel setup goes heres a quick sketch of the setup, nothing elaborate really

@bmaverick
My micro fin machining style is patented so if you want to use it you will have to send me some compression fittings and a gallon of distilled h2o ; )

Looks really nice for hand done work(for the fins). Are you gonna take it to a machine shop to plan the base down, or are you gonna do it yourself? Also whats the blocks dimensions for length and width?

Keep sharing pictures please :)

love the dremel setup. i was really curious how you were able to pull off something so fine with a dremel. makes sense now though!

one question, in your pic, you show that you have it so the block moves left and right, while the dremel is stationary right? what bit do you use for the actual cutting?

beautiful work btw. ^_^

No, the arm that the dremel is attached to moves while the block remains stationary. I too am interested in what he used as a fin cutting bit. Perhaps some sort of diamond cutting blade like the ones you get at Harbor Freight?

i saw that to, but with the stated movement of the block, i'm curious which moves during cutting. the dremel or the block. whichever moves, what actually is used for the cutting

(even tho that one pic series reminds me of a certain shock website :O)

The dremel moves when cutting, it's the item connected to an arm with a pivot point.

The block is held in place by a fence, it only moves between cuts to position itself for the next new line.

The polycarbonate really makes this block look special, it's nice to see something other than acetal or acrylic. I wish the new XSPC blocked used it, especially since the plastic is the main mounting component.

awesome water flow pictures!

thats actually something that i'd like people to show when doing water block reviews - not just the flow via a chart, showing the actual water flowing out the block like that

I finally managed to find time to install and test the block.

I 've tried to recreate some of the conditions that Vapor had while testing the cpu 370 ( i7 920 @ 1.45 vcore, 19 x 200 3800mhz, water was at a steady 29C ).

@Kayin

I would stay away from cheap blades, they dull in no time and you might mess up the piece of copper too.

Heres a link to the place that I plan to order from.

Have fun :)
