View Full Version : Wow EK wish you had this warning up before I bought your GAP67A-UD7-B3 Block. Latenow

So I bought & installed the EK nickel/plexi P67A-UD7-B3 block way back when B3 first came out. Description at the time had ZERO information about not being able to use the very top PCIE_16 slot with certain cards. Well I just finally put everything in case, wired everything up and bam. My 580 won't fit top 16 slot. What do you know. So now no way I can SLI my 2 580's in the PCIe_16 slots. Stuck with a useless EK full cover. Hours/days wasted. Looks like they eventually added a "Caution may not be able to use top slot with certain cards". Little late for me.

You'll notice most vendors copy/paste the Company specs/info sheet to the product. No one has this warning up. EK put it up way later on their site. Such a waste of time. sigh...

Time to break out the dremel?

Can you cut the anchor off Graphic Cards? I'll probably just take this piece of crap off and use the original gigabyte cooler. I've been slowly collecting so many parts and doing some really cool things for this build. Just figures as I put together poo happens. EK really should have had that warning up in the beginning.

Can you post a pic of how it is incompatible? I'm curious because I wanted to buy this block and want to be able to put a 6990 in the top slot.

This guy didn't seem to have a problem? (post #4)

or you talking about actually cutting into the block? I'd never try either so doesn't matter ;/ Oh well just another $100+ wasted in this hobby. Nothing really new. EK moved to bottom of my list pretty fast. I bet my CPU nickel comes off when I get this running. I'll be really happy and excited if so.

Yes give me a minute. Restarting phone, email not working. BRB!

Here is anchor hitting the block.

This is a EVGA 580 3gig card btw. 6990's fit I guess.

This guy seems to get it in ok? 3gb EVGA 580 seems to be reference so the anchor should be the same shape as the 1.5gb version, just with higher density ram.

I dunno. I have EVGA. Maybe they are different or I'm just doing something wrong. But I doubt it, I have installed the block perfectly and no matter this card will not fit.

So the top card doesn't go in all the way? It looks like it's plugged in, although the anchor is visibly hitting the block. Does it power up and detect both cards?

I can't get the 2 cards lined up good enough for my connector fitting. If I pulled out my bottom card a little I could probably get them together but as of now I can't get top card seated correctly. The front goes in all the way but back is sticking out a bit.

those tabs at the end dont do anything electrically, they are just there for locks so its ok if they touch things or if u cut them off/trim them (though im sure that will void the warranty.)

So if I don't let the bottom card completely lock in I can get them to connect. I'm just worried that they will lose power or something later by not being locked in place.

RMA it - if they've updated the item compatibility to make it incompatible with your system since purchase then I'd say that's grounds for a refund. Definitely dont go cutting the 580 pcb or running them not clipped in. Disaster waiting to happen imo...

How far would your block have to move to get the card fully seated ? I can't tell from the pic.

Gamb311

not much, quarter of an inch? Maybe tiny bit more. Do you even have to have cards locked in place? Or would they be okay if 90% in slot?

I'd want them fully seated.

they dont have to be locked to work, but they need full contact, they can die if they unplug them selves while on so its not a good idea unless u are on a bench table

do all the cards not fit, and do u really need liquid on those low watt parts im sure if u cannot get the block replaced with a fully compatible one u could grab a pair of enzo chipset coolers and it would work just as well if not better.

Can you not run them in the x8 pci-e slots and call it a day? Maybe 1-2% less performance if that.

I would RMA the block, even if it's just for store credit.

Guess you can add this block to the list (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?267432-EK-Coolstream-revision&p=4869818&viewfull=1#post4869818)

I messaged craven on OCN (the guy with tri sli 580s with the EK mobo block) and this is what he said:

Yes .. bad design from EK
I tested my system and so far no problem found.. just make sure the expansion slot screw is tightened.

So, it seems like RMA won't help, if there's been no revision of the block.

I'm not going to RMA it. I'm going to take a dump on it. I'll post pics later!

So why hasn't Eddy or tiborrr chimed in yet with a solution?

EK, anybody home?
