View Full Version : 6990 Running to hot? VReg Temp at 96 Deg

I just got my 6990 and put a Koolance VID-AR699 waterblock on it.
and i'm not comfortable with the temperatures i'm getting.

at Idle
116882
Under load (mining)
116883
Under load about 10 min.
116884

And my VReg is curretly jumping around 96 Deg.
water temp is high around 40 - 45 deg, but that is just a guess.
Room Temperature is 33 deg.

initaly after seeing the temperature of the VReg,
I removed the waterblock and checked to make sure there was a proper indentation in all the thermal pads. and there seemed to be some indentation in all the pads.

is the VReg temp normal?

water cooling setup is
Apogee XT on CPU I7 930 OC to 4.3
waterblock on ram and motherboard, home made... just a 3/8 copper pipe running along the MB and RAM
RAds are 2 420 (3x140) with 6 140mm Yate loom fans in pull config.
and 2 MCP655 for pumps.

thoughts?

MB email Koolance and see what they say. Idk really ... could be the program your running is not reading it right...

pics of installed block? pics of removed block with installed pads? check PCB by hand/pyrometer during load to find "bad guys" and make sure of proper contact between faulty VRM and block/pad

well I put a thicker thermal pad on the VReg and the temp dropped to 73 deg...
I'll drop koolance an email and C what they have to say.

Thanks.

73 is a lot better, but vregs run really hot anyway... I would think for stockish clocks it should not really get above 65c IMHO. But on air they go above 100c. ;)

I just put the same block on my 6990 today and my VReg temperatures are off the charts as well. 75 for GPU 1 and 85+ for GPU 2, during load. I left the stock backplate on and it is warm/hot to the touch during load. Could it be the VRMs on the back of the card that are producing the heat, since they are not watercooled?

If anyone can chime in as well it'd be great, I've also asked on the Koolance forums and am awaiting a reply, and will email Koolance tomorrow.

Heres my temps:

Time for some purchased air heatsinks chopped short if needed and some good Thermal Sticky tape.

Vregs on the back and not cooled.....??????

DO you have any temps for when your 6990 was air cooled? where your VReg also running as hot?

my machine hangs over time with the 6990 mining

I put the block on the 6990 as soon as I got it, WC from day 1. What to do.

I did the same.
I should have run it first and got all the temps...

My temporary solution is to open up the side of the case and put a large, human sized fan (the type people use to blow themselves during summers) blowing directly at the card. The temperatures seem pretty stable so far while mining.

I'll have to try that.

I'll have to try that.

Actually don't try it. My GPU will still reach 100% and freeze, it only takes a bit longer.

so there are voltage regulators on the back that need to be cooled?
can anyone post a picture of the back and show where the voltage regulators are?
I can probably implement some sort of a block to keep it cooler.

You might want to join us at our discussion here if you are at ocn, there's an ongoing discussion about it:

did a quick read.
but obviusly have lots more to read...
My issues is it runs hot when on stock cooling as well
So i will try to RMA it.

Bad vreg cooling by those blocks. here is 2 x 6990 cooled by Swiftech Epsilon FC and i7 690 (usually @ 4GHz) with Swiftech GTX in the one loop with MCP655 pump and 1 x MCR 220 QP and 1 x MCR 420 QP in serial both rads with 1500rpm LianLi fans in push pull. Ambient picks for below temps are 22C...gaming in eyefinity mode on 3 x 24" monitors @ 6048x1200 gpu temps max out at 38-40C and cpu is mid 30's to 40C...both with ambient temps of mid 20'sC

Another user commented that vreg temps during normal use of gaming doesn't ever go above 55C to 60C, it only happens during high stress like Furmark or Bit Mining. But other blocks don't seem to exceed the upper 60s which leads me to believe this is a design flaw as the block cannot dissipate the heat well enough on High load/stress.

Just checked via GPU-Z while running MSI Kombuster (same as FurMark) in windowed mode with 80% gpu usage and gpu cores were 34-38C with vreg not even hitting 30C on either of the cards after 10 mins.

Remember though that the Swiftech Epsilon 6990 FC doesn't use thermal pads for the vreg....just straight Artic Ceramique on the vreg's and good contact with the block.

i think my stock cooling temp look better than your temp
