Last week I poked around on ebay and found a very limited number of 5870 cards. Just checked now and there are dozens of them listed.

Is the sudden liquidation due to difficulty increases or are people spooked because of the mtgox hacks?

Combination of both, IMO. People are trying to cash out of the hardware investment early, while there's still a market for these cards. Can't say I blame them with the madness that's been going on. Don't think right now is the best time, personally... I'd want to see a correction before making my decision, instead of dumping now with little to no information.

I'm actually hoping maybe with the sudden semi-panic and flood of cards that maybe I could snag one for dirt :D

Doesn't look that way. They're still selling at retail prices for USED cards. Might as well just go new and have peace of mind. You are going to be pushing it, after all.

Panic. It's a fun thing to do, especially for larger groups of people.

gotta love panic.... for me I never invested in any new cards so if the market crashed today I would be no less behind then before. also the more people who sell off now with the panic, the less people mining and the higher the value for BTC. so if anything its a good thing for us.

there are a lot of cards fs at anand and hard; some with decent prices and some rediculous
thought about trying to pick another up, but might wait it out and see how this goes.

Hmm, I hadn't seen many for reasonable prices, but haven't looked in the last week or two.
What are you guys thinking is "reasonable"? I'd consider that ~200 US. I'm afraid all this bitcoin craze is going to make it hard for me to build my Crossfire-Eyefininty setup for Battlefield 3!

200$ for 5870? They are 290$+ in my country... Consider few times lower salaries...

I bought a NIB 5870 off CL for $220.

Nice.
I'm in a bit of a technological backwoods, never anything good like that here locally!
I am noticing better deals on cards on the bitcoin forums. It looks like the big cash grab is over and miners are starting to run scared.

Eyefinity isn't too good as a crunching card. You need to buy an MDP to VGA adapter in order to make a dummy plug, unless I'm missing something.

5870's are pretty much all sold out here in retail shops. strange, not long ago everyone was selling them

No dummy plugs required in Linux. If you're building a dedicated miner Linux is really the only option.

I hear ya, man. Not a day goes by without me kicking myself for not knowing enough linux. I got into Gentoo a little recently, but not enough to comfortably crunch on. /shame :shakes:

I would have to look again; I've seen 5830's new for $130, 5850's under $200; and 5870's around the $200-250 figure. But some are still rediculous. Just have to keep your eye out cause the cheaper ones go really quick. This just started this week being more reasonable

I still see 5850's for 130 NIB at loacal retailers... (after MIR but still)

bitcoins are for sure the reason why the price of cypress went way back up. not too long ago 200 bucks was the going price for a 5870...

I'm thinking old stock too, the 6000 series is the current gen so I don't think they would keep making too many more 5000 series cards.

Why the craze with 5870s for Bitcoin? Are the 6000s really that much slower?

don_xvi
06-24-2011, 04:17 AM
The conventional wisdom out there is that the 5870 is the best thing out there, but they're scarce. The 6000 series was rebalanced to make it work more efficiently as a graphics rendering engine, but not quite as good at crunching.

Of course, the whole point of this thread is that all of a sudden the early-bailers are selling equipment and the prices are going down.

I think we're about a day or two from another difficulty increase, it'll wind up balancing out at some point. The market price of a BTC is actually what will determine the profitability of continued mining!

It happened half an hour ago

I am waiting for Mt.Gox to go back online - it should affect the price (finally).

Why the craze with 5870s for Bitcoin? Are the 6000s really that much slower?

It's all about shader count, and how much it costs to get the shaders. The 5000's are organized less efficiently, their shaders are grouped in blocks of 5 instead of 4. That 5th shader often went unused/underused. They tweaked the organization of the shaders in the 6000 series to be more powerful, however a side effect is they are grouped in 4s and thus less shaders total. In bitcoin mining, the grouping does not matter, just the number of individual shaders, all of which are used in parallel.

5870 - 1600 shaders => There is no HD6000 series with this many shaders and you have to buy an expensive 6970 to get close
5850 - 1440 shaders
5830 - 1120 shaders => requires a $200 6870 to match it, which is why the $109 5830's vanished so fast.
