Ever forget about the thermal paste? You know, that giant tube of guk trapped in the back of your "stuff" drawer?

I did. Yep, I forgot about it real good. I forgot so much I didn't even recognize the silver-grey junk the kids squirted on my floor a few weeks back. I just cleaned it up.

This morning I tore apart my shiny new Evga GTX 570 SC for some water-blockin' fun. I was feelin' fine, having just scored killer deals on both card and block. Especially fine; it's been a while since my last major upgrade (4890 replaced a dead GTX 280).

I was feelin' fine.

...until I found the empty tube of AS5 (the big one)...

...and then discovered the empty tube of MX-2...

The whole system was torn apart. I had no choice but to put it back together one way or another, so I did what any self-respecting geek will never do: I stole the thermal pads off the stock sink for the various-and-sundries and used the thin EK pad for the GPU.

All is well-ish. Temps max at 66c in the Evga test tool, and I've conservatively clocked the card up to 810/1620/4000, but I do have a tube of PK-1 on the way ;)

...at least I didn't have to resort to toothpaste like the old days, eh? :D

The card's at 850/1700/4000 and tops at 70c core (stock volts) on EVGA's OC scanner. Figure that's good enough 'til my paste get here ~Tuesday. Then the overvolting commences :hrhr:

I probably would have ...

Nah, I have about 50 million tubes of various TIM.

Anti-seize lubricant makes a decent impromptu TIM. I've used it before on some P4 boxes that are still going strong.

Better to have TIMd to have not TIMd at all
