Can Multiple USB devices cause mboard failure?

Hi All , dont know if this is the right place for this query ,
but I have an interesting (scary) situation where a friends laptop
had a mboard failure + most of the usb peripherals damaged
printer,kyboard,7-port usb hub,mouse ....
can too many usb devices cause some kind of over-volt process ?

if u have a non powered hub u can easily kill a port especialy on a laptop from it drawing to much current.
