I orderd a few dozen pots of alot of different kinds to get me by for sometime, but while they are usually marked on a bag like "20k Vr" or so....

I now have 6 bags here full of pots, and I have no idea of what is what...

they all have numbers and such on them, I am hoping they indicate what they are, but I cant figure out how to read them.

Use a DMM, set to Ohms and measure one from each bag.

you could pull some out and measure them with a multimeter till you find some that will work. thats what i did as at work we have tons of pots but without looking up part numbers i have no idea whar resistance they are.

I've honestly never had to read a pot from a multimeter.
I usually got them labled in a bag or in boxs from radioshack.
but this time, I have them, and don't have a clue what ones what, or how to check them with a multimeter.

I got them here.

great place, as they ship very fast and cheap.
but no lables makes this very strange to me.

is there any way I can just look up the part numbers?

heres some numbers from them.

Pot1- 3006P 103 0207F5

Pot2- 3006P 203 0206L2

is there anything in this code to tell me whats what?

if you look at the middle number in the part number that usually is what resistance it is so pot 1 is probally a 10kohm pot tell this by the 103 or 10 with 3 zeros and pot 2 is probally a 20kohm pot 203 20 with 3 zeros.if you got a multimeter put on lead on the one post and the other on the other lead and measure (2 outside leads) then the middle to outside will be where you adjust it.

hey thank you, thats it.
it has to be.

I just broke down the 6 types of pots I have, with your code idea, and it matches my order perfectly.

Thank you :)

yea, the model numbers you shown, the first should be 10k and the second 20k.

102 = 1k
103 = 10k
203 = 20k
503 = 50k ( I BELIEVE... don't quote me)

i order my trimpots from www.hosfelt.com

they come in little baggies, all ordered by model #, and they're $0.85 a piece!

kunaak glad i could help. stang_manyou are correct.the first 2 numbers shows the base number ans the last shows how many zeros. this is the same as with the resistors on cpu's and resistors on mobo's. or just about and surface mount resistors.

so 100k VR = 104 and 200k VR = 204?

and so on?

every one of my resistors can be sorted out by using that exact method ;)

stang yes 100k will be 104 and 200k will be 204 you are correct.
