Hi, i've been contemplating this for a while now, I was wondering if it would actually be worth spending around £40-£60 to improve my cooling on my system to OC. As in, would the money be worth the performance increase, or would it just be better to wait till I upgrade my CPU. Im currently running stock cooling.

Average temps are around...

Idle. 50c
Load. 55c

Specs

AMD Athlon XP 2200+
Jetway KT266/333
Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 256mb
TwinMos 512mb DDR PC3200

Was just curious if its worth spending the ammount I suggested, will it be compensated with performance?

I would say no. This is a Thoroughbred A CPU, even with the best of cooling won't go much higher than that. Nothing else than changing your motherboard and CPU worths it. With a little amount of money you can get a KT600 motherboard and a Thoroughbred B 1700+ or Duron 1.4 which overclock high.

Agreed^^

I comparison I can say that going from a REALLY crappy alu cooler to 226w TEC helped me from ~1800 to just over 2000mHz this on a 2000+ "A".
Basically Tbred A isn't worth spending any cooling on.

Thanks for the advice, wont bother then. Will just wait to get a new CPU and mobo.

I managed to get my 1700xp Tbred A upto 2GHz (10x200) with 1.9V stable, with a HSF :)

Guess I was kinda lucky

I'd have to agree as well.

Thoroughbred A's are useless overclockers. They hardly overclock better than a Palomino.

I picked up a KT400 motherboard. Two 80mm case fans coming this weekends and a 120mm fan also. Going to speak to a few friends and see if they have any 1700+ 'tbred b'.

The 1700+'s have really caught my attention over the past few months but I unfortunately have never had the pleasure of playing with one. Will look into picking myself one up.

Also considering a Duron, i've been hearing of durons also hitting the 2.5GHz mark frequently aswell as them being cache modded into tbreds. I am less sure which duron to purchase though, 1.6GHz for £28? or 1.8GHz for £36?

Any feedback is greatly appretiated.
