Back in the UD and FaD days.

Intel was definitely not happening... :)

Spring cleaning the cave the other day, I found my old Umax laptop which I'd written off due to u/s screen. Applied some power and a monitor and what popped up was the UD manager working on a task  It's only five years late. Wonder if I'll still get credit :ROTF:

Lol, good times! I think we are a bit spoiled today with out 50k ppd Machines and 100K+ DP SR-2 Rigs (I don't have wither of these btw lol) but still its sooooo much easier to hit high PPD Today... What's a scarier thought is if you put the same amount of money towards equipment today... what kind of Farm could be built :D

The M-2600+ was the first nice game machine I had with a GeFore 6800 on a MSI PLatinum MB.

For those who do not know [XC] servl is DCManiak with 271,994,577 WCG points or 38,858,089 Boinc points. He is also a cancer survivor.

And has been a HUGE inspiration of mine. Scott is one of the best people I have ever had the pleasure meeting on the internet, and I hope one day I'll get to meet him in person!

Feel like a kid reading some old text book lol

[XC] serlv (Scott), thanks for all your crunching and paving the way for the next gen of crunchers. The machines may have changed significantly but us humans have not, so we still need to band together to solve the problems we face. Cancer is one of those problems we MUST get a handle on in our western culture. Way too many good people suffering from this insidious disease.

PoppaGeek thanks for the background, it sure helps us relative newbies connect with others on this forum.

Wow. Just got back to this since first posting. Nice to read the other posts and to see and meet fellow crunchers new and old. Movieman definitely made it a challenge to determine who exactly is posting, though!

Hoping to build a Sandy Bridge cruncher. I like new processors!
So, what's the situation with SB motherboards. Rectified?
Any mid-level recommendations? Can't be Asus. I don't do them anymore. I could care less if it was 50% better than the next best.

Thanks, Otis. DAK recommends that board, too.

Alternatively, I've been looking at 17" laptops, loaded, and with a 2720QM (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=50067) inside. Mobile Sandy quad! :)

I've never did replace that sweet laptop I had for a while while I was "illin' ". Bastards burglarized my house and grabbed it three months after I bought it. It was nice; a 2.53 GHz C2D VAIO.

Were you covered for the break in Scott- because that will be a great replacement for a laptop!

There was a deductible but the loss was greater than just the laptop, there was also a Nazi-stamped Luger and few other things.

I've been comparison shopping, and with coupons. That market moves fast! I'm tired and wornout! LOL. Could have gotten it cheaper earlier today... No rush. There will be a new round of coupons. :)

That Luger was, of course, registered and reported as stolen. Wouldn't want the cops coming looking for you after someone else does sommat bad with your gun.

holy smokes.
this one wasn't in pristine condition, but definitely kept functional and lubed
i figured after looking at charts and stuff, it was probably worth 1500-1800.

So, I finally decided. And ordered. This morning. This is going to be one badass friggin' laptop.

And, I never thought I'd say this, but I'm getting a Dell. LOL.

2720QM Sandy Bridge quad ( up from the 2630QM )
6 GBs RAM
17.3 screen, upgraded to 1080P screen
HD webcam builtin, first Skype certified HD laptop
640 GB HDD ( will be looking at SSD's... )
upgraded wireless, bluetooth, battery
BlueRay BD-Combo optical
Microsoft Bluetooth mouse
NVIDIA GT 550M 1GB graphics with Optimus and TV Tuner
Backlit Internal Keyboard

Think I'm gonna like it.

Guess I won't be building a SB system for a while while I digest this purchase.

Got a really good price, after many coupons and discounts. Well over $400 in coupons, plus free S&H.
But still the upgrades ( plus sales tax... :( ) definitely upped the final cost. The system is pretty loaded.
