Can I have your opinion on it? It seems far better than computer speakers and just as compact as a normal 2.1 setup. Also, would a good soundcard make a difference, or can I just use optical out from the motherboard?

I would use it mainly for music (classical, some old rock) and movies on my computer. I am old and I don’t think I can distinguish the nuances of sound in a high end setup. Thanks. :)

If music is important I would definitely recommend something else, but the ones you listed are very compact and would do fine for daily activity. For someone looking for music I recommend speakers that have bigger woofers to handle the mid range better. Anything that has a 3 inch driver or smaller usually are pretty bad in that arena. Checkout Cnet as there might be some reviews on that product.

I did check reviews - CNET pretty much trashes it, but there are plenty of other positive reviews; there is also a thread at AVS forums where most posters seem to be happy with it.

I’ve never used a receiver, and this system seemed to be a choice worth exploring, given its compact size.

I take your point on driver size, thanks!

After taking a closer look at it I do see the charm that this unit brings. It is very compact, and at an affordable price. As far as the features it offers, this product as just about zero competitors, unless you go for a separate receiver system. Though if space isn't an issue I would still urge you to consider other options. The setup you listed is a set, they go together. And because of that fact the upgradability is none. A good setup of bookshelf speakers and a separate amplifier would sound just as good as this setup because their subwoofer is so weak.
I would encourage you to look at some Energy speakers, or maybe some polk monitor30 speakers. I am a big polk fan because of their availability and their very competitive price point. If you choose to go a separate route let me know and I can help you find components to your liking.

This amp does not have hdmi, so if that's an issue... it's something to keep in mind.
