Why do these chips have to be so expensive? Maybe it would be worth it if the thing cost $500 instead of $1000+

Because people buy them :)
As long as there are customers, Intel has no reason to lower prices.
These chips are meant for people with money.

Nice, but I'm sticking to my 980x until socket 2011 comes out.
I just wonder if with the new IMC, these chips will be able to hold a high uncore for 24/7 usage.

Looks awesome, but no way in hell I can afford that. :(

Overpriced for the performance gain imo. Us UK users also have to put up with the stupid $=£ (i.e. £1,050) so we end up paying near double the price.
They would sell more if they lowered the price by $200 or so, but there are still those with more money than sense.
I would probably dribble a little if I got my hands on one though!

Here you go:
They are beasts, take less voltage than the 980x's for the same speeds and did I say they are beasts?
Will that do ya?

Most likely he will go

And then cry in a corner for not being able to afford one (like me :().

5 in stock currently at The Egg.

I'll stick to Sandy Bridge for 24/7 rigs, 990X only useful to me for benches and Folding@Home.

These are actually "cheap" because they are selling for the same price as 980x, while having several new goodies/improvements. The best part of this "cheap"-pricing, the 980x has fallen a lot already, for sure.

These are not for gaming and such, you got those dirt cheap SB for that, these are high-end for those who need CPU power for 3D-render, simulation, F@H ... and such.

They won't get cheaper unless AMD can compete in high-end. Intel will keep squeezing a grand for these, unless AMD can get it's acts together and compete in high end.

Still at $1K, really not worth it, I would have expected Intel to price this lower because of the i7 2600K but I guess not.

The Egg did right by me. I have not opened my 980x and they gave me a refund in order to get the 990x. They may be overpriced, but economics 101-supply-demand always prevails, and please, no elasticity arguments.

The 965 lasted me two years and so did the two 285's. If you can get two years out of a high end system, go for it. Just my 2 cents.

I got 4 years of out Q9450 for a lot less.:D

No worries, there will be 6 core CPU's at half the price very shortly.

Good for you! How often do you change your tires?

CPU is not tires so you cant compare the two or five.

Is 990x an improved silicon revision? Can we expect 4.7Ghz w/HT to be 24/7 stable with acceptable voltage ?

Some improvements are there for sure, at least based on what we have seen on those few ES-chips.
I personally expect these to be pretty much like SB, both in term of OC-headroom and voltages, then they should hit 4.8- 5GHz for 24/7, but we have to wait and see retail chips in real actions, soon.
