View Full Version : Changing CPU Blocks Worthwhile?

I'm about to install my liquid cooling for a 1055T Thuban which consists of:

MCP350 (Modded to 355) w/ XSPC Reservoir Top
MCR-220 w/ Yate Loon D12SL-12's
D-Tek Fuzion V1 w/ Nozzle

I bought the Fuzion used for cheap, but i'm considering changing it to a XSPC Rasa, and i'm curious what kind of actual temperature difference i'm looking at. From what i've been able to find its around 3C - 4C, is this accurate and do you guys think it'd be worthwhile to eat $70 (Approx price of block + mounting plate + shipping + cost of a Fuzion i'll likely never sell)?

Personally I wouldn't think so. I have my doubts the few degree drop in temperatures isn't going to be all that beneficial.

Well im not exactly sure how the Xspc rasa is but i know the Ek supreme HF is about 5C better then a old skool D-tek V2... And i believe you cant mod the new 350 pumps because the PCB is 3.1, unless your 350 is older..

Unless some magical material comes along to really take thermal transfer to a new level, I'll stick with my D-Tek Fuzion's. Simply not worth it IMO.

Its an older revision.

How old we talking ??? If its a few years old then yes you can mod that sucker :D

tell me of this modding buisness....what does it do, exactly?? when you mod from 350 to 355? i just bought a 350 and a xspc top.

If your pump looks like this, then you can do it (just need to add the solder), otherwise, your S.O.L..

When did you get it and what color is the impeller?

Computurd

well i bought it off a guy about three months ago. relatively no thought involved. it was for twenty bucks so impulse buy. did no research whatsoever.

IDK, I hate to tell you this but, it looks like it might be one of those fakes that pop up from time to time. Looks like they're getting better at making them. :shakes: What color is the other side of the impeller? Looks like it's black or blue.

I really wish we had a Laing Rep here to help sort these things out. I'm fairly well versed on the DDC's and don't ever recall seeing any version like this. There is a very outside chance it could be a pull from a Mac but I think all those have the compensator on the bottom.

so, if in fact, this is a knock-off, what are the uses for it? should i use it or just trash it? i have 2 KMP=400 with attached reservoirs that i purchased here, and they are pretty good. didnt really have any plans for the mcp, but just picked it up on the off chance that it could be used, somewhere, someway. even considered watercooling my WHS with it. i know, retarded, eh? but i have spare res and rads galore. so why not?
anyways...please advise of any serious cons to using this going forward?

Treat it as a $20 pump and you can't go wrong. Its definitely like no DDC I've ever seen. That pcb is so thin you can see straight through it .

Personally I'd keep it as either an emergency spare or in series.

i was just about to say, is that a bloody gun sitting on your desk? would be the last place i would leave one, get pissed at my computer and end up putting a few holes in it.

for the record, it isnt bloody:p:
LOL nobody, but nobody, interrupts computer time! :)

ok so back on topic, is this or is it not, a fake pump? i mean i need to be a hundred percent, because i intend upon emailing this dude nicely ifn it is a fake.

This is what all 3 versions of actual non Mac DDC's look like.

Yours comes close to but is not the same as the old DDC-1 (Black impeller-9 watt) pumps. The shape of the metal part of the impeller and the opening on the top of it are a good bit different. Also, as Pilsy pointed out, that PCB is pretty thin and also doesn't exactly match any of the known DDC archetypes. I would say with a good 90% certainty that your is not a genuine Laing.

As for what to do with it...best I can come up with is what Pilsy said, treat it like a $20 pump and keep an eye on it.

It's a knockoff. I remember a guy selling those for about $20 or so, almost got one myself. It's probably still a decent pump with good flow, so I wouldn't throw it out. Put the top on it and it will probably perform fine. It's also probably not bad for a backup if one of your pumps goes out. I doubt it would ever get used for that, but I do see one bite the dust every Blue moon, although I have never had one go out on me personally.

Computurd why dont you do the pressure test with 2 buckets, one pumping other emptying.. Might aswell test it mate..

As for the ops post, if you're xtreme enough, yes changing blocks is worth it.

If you're not fussed about the difference in temps, then no.

Changing your CPU block would likely gain you a few degrees lower temperature - however, it is doubtful that with the Fuzion v1, temps are the limiting factor in the OC'ing of your 1055T ;)

So unless you're a freak for lower temperatures without tangible gain (like my overkill rad get-up), stick with your Fuzion.

EDIT: Woah! Fake DDC!
