ASUS P8P67 series Double POST at Cold Boot Fix

Some of you may have been experiencing a double POST on your P8P67 series motherboard whereupon after powering on the system from a cold boot, the board will power on and then immediately reset itself before it actually POSTs and shows any display on the screen. I’ll explain the fix below and give some information about why this happens.

First, I would like to stress the importance of flashing the BIOS to the latest BIOS revision as listed on our support website, http://support.asus.com/download. You can access the ASUS EZ Flash tool from within the UEFI (advanced options, tools) to flash the BIOS from any removable device such as a USB flash drive.
From time to time we needed to implement full resets in order to maintain stability due to the architecture of the Sandy Bridge platform. For instance, the system may require one full reset when the PCH power has been cut during S5 power state. To fix the most common additional reset (double POST when powering on from off state), enter UEFI BIOS -> go to ‘Advanced’ tab -> go down to ‘APM’, press Enter -> enable the “Power on by PCIe.” function. Then press F10 to save & exit. After save & exit, let the system boot into Windows or other OS, then perform a proper shutdown: Start button -> Shut down. You will no longer have the double POST. We will fix this in an upcoming BIOS release.

Thank you, mine was having issues even cold booting at all with 100% stable OC settings sometimes. Other times it would hang detecting which drive to boot from, seems to have fixed it.

If you have any control over it, the LAN drivers on the support site for the P8P67 Pro are the wrong ones and no AI Suite listed for the Pro either.

If you have any control over it, the LAN drivers on the support site for the P8P67 Pro are the wrong ones and no AI Suite listed for the Pro either.

We may rename the Intel LAN drivers internally to a different version number that what you would find on Intel's website but they are still the same thing. The AI Suite II installation file can be found in the 'Utilities' section of our downloads site. http://support.asus.com/download -> type P8P67 PRO in top left search field -> select your OS version -> click the Utilities category.

You're welcome. We've actually fixed this issue altogether with a recent BIOS update. This upcoming BIOS release will also increase stability/ OC stability and scalability, etc. It should be on our support site soon. I would say possibly by tomorrow.

They are all correct now. Previously there were Realtek drivers up and the AI Suite wouldn't load on the Pro, seemed like it was for the M4E.

This issue reminds me somewhat of the 975X strap issue, when the boards have to power down completely past 320 FSB. I remember this was fixed by having the board NOT cut power to the power supply, 12v, but only to the board itself. Intel is always doing something funky with the chipsets...

I seem to still have the problem when the power is completely off and the motherboard dosn't get any power and it also seems that it makes my Raid setup fail big time each time. :(
But the new bios 1253 fixed the double post when shuting down/restarting from Windows.

Can you provide more details as to the exact problems with you RAID array as well as your specs? Also, can you confirm that you still experience double post after system has been powered down for a length of time? Shutting down from Windows and having the power completely off should result in the same S5 state (no power). Can you explain how you're testing "when the power is completely off and the motherboard dosn't get any power" and how that is different from shutting down from within Windows? Thanks.

Hi Mason,

It looks like that a couple of clear bios has fixed the double post, if the power is turned off completly at the wall socket, I can confirm this on both the 1253 beta bios and the new 1204 bios. :up:

I also found out the my RAID array problems was due to wrong shi** harddrives, Western Digital Cavier Green 2TB EARS models, that can't do any RAID setup I wasn't aware off before I bought them. :down:

Though it seems that after I set my settings back to RAID after a bios flash when settings are reset and I boot the RAID says failed, then in Windows I have to reset array to normal.
For some reason it looks like it looses the harddrives after a bios flash? :confused:

I'm suffering a cold boot issue, although it does not cause a double post.

I have 2x OCZ Vertex 2e 50GB drives in Raid 0. When I boot from cold I get the some text followed by the Mavell sata screen then i get a flashing bar and the Hard drive light stays on. After a minute I get Raid failed and it reports the first Vertex as a sandforce with only 1/2 the size.

Most of the time, if I power off and then back on the issue is not there and everything boots normally.

Same symptoms occur in the 3GB and 6GB slots, i'm currently using the 6GB slots to avoid the Intel pottential bug.
I have tested both drives on other machines and even flashed them to the latest firmware.

This was not an issue prior to 1253 and 1204 bios updates.

Any help would be apprechiated.

I was having a shutdown/cold boot issue with a pair of machines one P8P67 Vanilla and one Deluxe both had BIOS 1253 and overnight stable overclocks.

The fix appears to have worked.

Actually it's not fixed. Before applying the fix in the OP the systems would POST fail every shutdown. After applying the fix this stopped and became POST fail after a cold boot (system switched off and unplugged for over 30mins). This is happening on two systems with or without the overclock applied:

P8P67, 4GB (2x2GB GSkill NQ 9-9-9-24 1600MHz), i7 2600K, GTX580
P8P67 Deluxe, 8GB (4x2GB Kingston KHX2000C9AD3T1K2/4GX @ 9-11-9-27 1866MHz), i7 2600K, SLi GTS450

Any idea how to get around this and if there is a newer BIOS?

Make that 5 known cases all on P8P67 Deluxe and Vanilla. I haven't seen it happen with the 2500K yet.

Having it here on the P8P67 vanilla and a 2400 CPU, non OCed, bios 1204

The error occurs as a no POST (no BIOS beeps), code 59 on the POST readout on P8P67 Deluxe, press and hold the power button to switch off and
After the machine has been shut down but left plugged in overnight the POST error will happen.
After the machine has been shut down and unplugged from the mains for ~30 minutes the POST error will happen.
After the machine has had the Intel MEI driver installed the error may occur on both the P8P67 and P8P67 Deluxe if MEI is not installed the error does not occur.
The error has occurred on systems with and without an overclock, K and non K CPUs with and without Hyper Threading with various types and quantities of RAM, PSUs and Graphics

Enabling Boot on PCI-E in APM helps with systems that tend to POST fail on an immediate restart after a shut-down but does not resolve the longer term issue.

Resetting the CMOS using the switch (Deluxe) or jumper (vanilla) has just worked on a group of six PCs of which at least 4 had exhibited the no POST issue.

I think a hard crash still results maybe in a no post ? should be fine if you force the OC failed state...

Just let it post twice, doesnt hurt anything and takes what maybe 5 seconds? On the deluxe board when raising bclk you get a Overclocking failed message, enter bios f10 and reboot and its stable. Just quirks to work around it ;)
