A while ago I drained and refilled. Had some copper colored buildup on my res that I cleaned out, I'm thinking something went weird with the copper sulfate PT-Nuke I was using? Maybe I had too much in there, I don't know, it just turned the res copper inside that had to be cleaned out...

Well, when I refilled, I was planning on putting in a killcoil instead of PT nuke this time. Except the coil hadn't arrived yet, so I just filled with distilled without any sort of biocide whatsoever. Um, that was months ago, and the killcoil is still sitting on the shelf... :para:

It got really dusty inside the computer over time so I decided to clean it. Noticed hmm the drain line looked a little funny...

Took the front panel off and....

OK that's just gross. Fine, I'll tear down the loop and replace the fill and drain lines. But, my primochill LRT wasn't translucent anymore. Odd... Then I noticed that tubing was filled with junk too... couldn't get a pic of the inside of the tubing, but lets just say it was nasty in there. enough that you can't see any light through it at all anymore.

And a shot of where it was connected to a barb to give an idea of how it was supposed to look

Oddly enough the res was still perfectly clear all this time.

Oh FUN!
I just stuck it all back together and refilled. I'm not going to even try to clean the tubes, I'm just ordering new ones and will scrub the blocks and flush the radiator really well.

Oops! Don't forget biocide!

The res was a long while ago, and that wasn't algae. It seriously appeared to be a thin layer of copper on the walls. It was hard too, very bizarre. And it was only stuck to the res, nowhere else. Now the algae is stuck to everything but the res, go figure

Something else I noticed - the LRT tubing is advertised as "anti microbial" - well I think it failed in that regard :ROTF:

Oh, and 13,000 post!

The algae did not touch your res I'd bet because there is still copper infused into the walls of it.

Well I think it is until you flush it out or mix it with nuke :p:

That's some serious goo in those tubes. When a loop gets that bad, all of the distilled vinegar you toss at it will not really help much. You need to up the cleaner to a true radiator flush. Drain the loop and fill with the cleaner and about 1/2 cup propylene glycol. Run the loop with the computer off. With that amount of goo, there is no telling how long you will need to run the concentrated cleaner. Drain the cleaner, rinse the through the loop thoroughly, drain again and now replace the tubing. (The PG is to ensure that the pump isn't running on the cleaner alone.)

I'll flush the radiator for sure, but not the whole loop. I'm going to replace the tubing and take apart and clean the blocks individually. Not sure about what is in the radiator flush so I don't want it contacting my acrylic res and possibly cracking it if it has any alcohol content. Besides, I don't have any propylene glycol just sitting around here either anyway :p:

That happened when I was just using an algaecide I got from a pet store. They work great but you need to continually add some to your loop every couple weeks as they break down and become ineffective over time.

That was after several months of me not refreshing the dosage. One day I noticed a small amount of brown stuff in my res and within 2 weeks that's what it looked like.

I've been using Nuke -PHN Concentrated Biocide + Distilled Water + Clear Tubing for about 6 months without any signs of algae in the loop.
