I need a good alternative to this ram:
512MB PC3200 DDR400 EL CAS2 (OCZ400512EL) @ 168$ a piece

I am getting 2 for this rig Im building

A64 3000+
Chaintech mobo
Ati Radeon 9800Pro

I dont want something way more expensive, but dont wanna downgrade too too much.

Anyways thanks in advance :toast:

I'd go for this:

TWINX1024-3200LL 2x512MB PC3200

Thats a pretty big jump though, is it worth it, or should I go for the OCZ platinums?

I have posted this before but I will say it agian anyway. Bowman guided me to the Mushkin Black LII for the Chaintech board and I would have to say he was correct. He had very good results with this combo and I have been very pleased myself. If Bowman recomends it you should listen. He won't stear you wrong!

yea but the thing is I cant get Mushkin from that site, and I dont plan on overclocking the ram much if at all, I just want high quality RaM that will run excellent at stock speeds.

I would still recomend the Mushkin as this board can be picky about the ram. I am not saying others won't work, I just know that Mushkin works very well.

Is mushkin way more expensive than the OCZ or Corsair?

Do Newegg charge extra to ship to Canada? That is if they do ship to Canada...

2 sticks of your Mushkin would cost me 12$ more if newegg doesnt charge extra and if there arent any extra charges tied to them.

Now if I go with the corsair he mentioned before it only costs me 375$ with everything plus shipping but Im also ordering 2 other things so wont be much of a factor, what do you guys think?

oh and another question, does the fact that the corsair is advertised as Dual channel matter? Im not too familiar with the dual channel thing, heck Im still running pc133 in my machine :stick:

I guess what I am asking is, can you buy ram that is advertised as Dual channel and run it on a non dual channel mobo?

I don't know about shipping. Have you looked at the price dirrectly from Mushkin?

Yes, a matched set will run single channel just fine.

do you think that corsair will be good, because it looks like thats my only choice if I am to order from the same site?

2-3-2 compared to the 2-2-2 of the mushkin, but the latter does cost a bit more, thats if I can even get it.

All this to say does that difference really matter if I am not to OC?

I like Corsair and am running several sticks as we speak. I don't think it will make much difference for everyday use. If money is the issue go with the Corsair. If you want the best with the option to push it later get the Mushkin.

the mushkin ram is excellent, but very picky when you try and run anything different than 2-2-2... its very very fast ram....but then again im still burning mine in.. a week ago it wouldnt do above 220, but a few days ago i managed 235 at 2.8v... could be my board to... but this stuff is faster than anything else ive owned...

i was told that mushkin programs the spd so the RAS-CAS delay is always 2 and nothing else.... would make sense to the degree that it doesnt like me to change it to 2.5 or 3... but how can a SPD default over a BIOS setting?

bottom line? Mushkin :rocker:

I vote for Mushkin also. I just received two matched sticks of the 512mb 3500 L2 from Newegg yesterday and so far they're doing great. I've got four sticks of the Corsair xms3500L2 (BH5 chips also) and the Mushkin is a bit faster.

Yup well I found the mushkin somewhere in canada but turn out it costs 600+$ plus shipping and taxes, the corsair Im looking at is only 375 + tax/shipping. Looks like Im gunna go for the corsair afterall
