Hey guys, got a good one for yea.

Building a computer for a friend, short version, Corsair 800d, Dual 580 SLI, CPU/GPU's under water. Will ship the computer in the box the case came in, so ok dokie there.

Now I am shipping this out to him next week. My main concern is the 580's. With those EK/FC blocks, they are heavy, and I worry UPS/Fedex won't be as gentle as you see on the tv. So I have to assuming it will take a few g's in the trip.

My first thought was to pack the inside of the case with packing peanuts, then I figured I would shoot you guys a post and see if someone has a better idea.

Yes I am going to drain the loop first (Someone would have said it).

Thanks!

packing peanuts might be a really bad idea in terms of static electricity
I would try to get or make some kind of standoff between the cards and the case

Remove the GPU's from the build. I once shipped a build with an installed gpu block and while the screw kept it attached to the motherboard tray the gpu came out of the slot and proceeded to bang on the motherboard.

Assume every carrier will drop it from 5 feet and then slam it around a little. If you don't want to be disappointed, remove anything loose and the gpu's and have your friend install them. Insurance won't help either if there isn't significant damage to the exterior of the box, which is hardly ever the case.

He is not the most tech guy you have ever meant, yea I know. I wouldn't want him to install two GPU's, let alone, hook water up to them.

Was thinking of using some Styrofoam blocks and mod some braces on all axis. Best I have come up with.

Last resort, ship the GPU's separate and walk him threw it.

Thanks for the responses, as always, greatly appreciated!

the shipping company WILL play basketball with your package!
these pics were taken by the customer on receipt
remove every slot connector you can, cards/ram etc. remove HDDS. box all parts up separately and post separately also. (less chance of theft/mass damage)

you can tell from the IDE drives that its an old pic..2002 i think, I had made this as a high end video editing box, and sent it from one side of Oz to the other to a Navy Admiral!

All is good, I talked him into driving 20 hours round trip to pick it up.

some survived better than that one, it looked like it had been run over by a forklift! :D

the basic ones survived ok, but anything with a card or a heavy heatsink... :(

foam blocks inside the case is a good idea, but definitely remove the cards for transport, even in his own car.
good luck

Good move. I somehow see this as the future of the case if sent via normal methods. ;)
