ok so right now I have a pair of 74GB raptors (the old school ones) in raid 0 for my boot drive, while they are pretty snappy when compared to a single 7200 rpm drive they are a little lacking

so I was thinking, even though the raptors will have a somewhat higher transfer rate than most single SSD under $100 (USD) the raptors still can not come close to the response time of even a cheap SSD

with the in mind is it going to really be worth ditching the old school raptors and buying a small SSD for my primary drive?

also what SSD would you guys recommend for around $100 or less?

as a boot drive - crucial c300 64gb for about 130, intel x25v 40GB for less, there is probably a good small sandforce based SSD in this price range.

It is definately worth switching to SSDs :)

I wouldn't buy anything < 60GB.
The Intel X25-V 40GB is a great drive but is best used in raid-0 both for speed and size. (40GB isn't that much to play with)

In the $100-150 price range I'd go for the C300 or the (OCZ Vertex 2/Corsair Force/Patriot Inferno/...) 60GB SF based drives.

Keep in mind that prices are expected to drop as 25nm NAND enters the market. (soon)

It is worth switching to SSDs , I went from pair of 74GB raptors in raid 0 to one Intel SDD and the response time of the Intel SSD kill's the pair of 74GB raptors in raid 0. Bootup & Game loading.

Not to mention things will be quieter by removing two noisy drives. I use a Corsair SSD 60GB and it is great.

Quieter...cooler....less energy use....much faster visibly
