Hello! I've lurked here for a while and have loved every minute of it.

My plucky watercooled Antec300/p45/e8400/5850 is thanks to you guys.

So - my first post.....hurrah..... :)

Would post this elsewhere but need the attention of the 'big boys' so to speak.

My brother's looking to buy a 30inch monitor running 2560x1600 and wanted to know what anyone's recommendations are?

Had a hunt around and couldn't find any decent 30" monitor round-ups.

He's got a good price on ebay for the Dell Ultrasharp 3008WFP but just wanted to sound it out with the informed crowd before he parted with the best part of £1000.

Its nice to finally make contact

I've been using samsungs sm305t since its release, is supposed to be the best mainstream 30" lcd. although that dell one you speak of has an hdmi input on it. and getting technical the sm305t has the best response time, and colour (aparently)

make sure you buy direct from the manufacturer and get the full blown warranty (3 years with samsung)

I have a Dell 3008WFP. It is a very good monitor but certainly not the best that I have seen. There are only a few choices out there for 30" monitors so you can't be too picky to get one. A friend of mine just got a 30" NEC and think his monitor is better than mine when it comes to working with colors but my Dell beats his for the array of connectors available. I don't think you can go wrong with a Dell's from a price per performance standpoint.

The one he's looking at on eBay is out of warranty but I've never heard of someone's monitor dying on them - anyone else?

my friend's lcd died, it was an older crappier one though, 17" piece of crap

Died in warranty though? They wouldn't offer 3 yrs as standard on most monitors if they didn't think it would last....? I work at a college and they're still passing on antique lcd monitors to staff.....;)
Speak now and help my brother save £100s or lose nearly £1000 if it dies..... :p:

Dell 3008 uses the LG W3000H panel. Dell 3008 has a scaler which creates image display latency (bad for gaming). The LG does not have a scaler but also only has one input. The Dell 3007 has no scaler.

One user on this forum has a Samsung 305t that is flashing on white backgrounds (indicating power supply problems or backlight problems with the monitor maybe).

NEC's are supposed to be "top of the line" but i've never seen or used one..

Samsung has pulled out of that market anyway havnt they? No more 30" monitors I read.
The other option is to go for the u2711 which does 2560x1440 - its abit cheaper and has none of the problems that the 3008fpw has, I can testify to this.
I would never spend that much money on a peice of kit that didnt have a warranty.... Rather spend the extra £100/£150 and buy it new!

I'm looking at getting another 30 inch monitor, and the LG W3000H-BN is the top candidate right now.. It will be nice to see how it compares against my Samsung 305T Plus, after it's repaired.

Thats the curse of the 30 inch monitor I suppose. Once you buy one, you simply can't imagine getting a smaller monitor ever again :yepp:

I'm pretty sure it's the backlight. Reducing the brightness in my Nvidia control panel ameliorates the problem somewhat.

They have the XL30, which is targeted squarely towards the professional market. Brand new, it costs well over 3,000 USD

I wish they would make another 30 inch LED monitor with a lower price tag for regular consumers.

I want a 2560x1080 or ~3420x1440 monitor.

OK I've made my decision. I'm going to get an HP ZR30w

It has the most up to date IPS panel, and is exceptionally well priced. Also it doesn't have any OSD to increase input lag

take a dell u2711.... is 16:9

2560*1600 is 16.10 and more game are fov incorrect without possibility to mod... or in most case play the game with bandage in upper and lower

OSD doesnt mean it doesnt have a scaler

Well, apparently an OSD can contribute to increased latency as well..

As HP explains it, the benefits of omitting OSD controls are four-fold, including lower power (versus models with front end processors), less components and thus less chance of a failure, lower latency from the graphics card to the LCD, and lower costs for the consumer.

Yes.

Good choice. This is what I went with as well. The build quality is very impressive. Same for the input lag (no scaler FTW) and image quality.
I'm sure you'll love it!

Edit: it needs calibration, keep that in mind.

It's lovely monitor though. My other is the Dell 3007WFP and I am quite happy with that. Side by side you can tell the difference though. Get the dell you won't be displeased.

I have the 30" NEC. I absolutely love the monitor. I only bought it because I found it refurb for 1000 USD. If I see another refurb or simply have 2300 USD to blow, I'd buy another in a second.

Colors & gamut, saturation, etc look amazing, I haven't noticed ghosting. The black lighting is very uniform except at the very edges on black backgrounds, but its slight and you have to look for it. All monitors suffer from this, but NEC did a good job of making it not so noticeable.

As for the 16:9 for gaming.... what games don't support 16:10? I haven't had any issues yet.

I cancelled my order for the HP ZR30w and got a ZR24w instead, which uses the same type of panel as the ZR30w, just in a smaller size and without the extended color support.

Another 30 inch monitor just seemed excessive to me, especially since it was supposed to just be a temporary replacement until my Samsung 305T Plus was fixed.

As much as I would have wanted, I could not in the end justify spending over 1K on another monitor when a 24 incher would suffice.....that and my wife was giving me those looks :D

Carfax - HP says it decreases latency, and they are correct in this instance, but removal of the OSD does not mean there is no scaler present.

Original 3008 A00 here....

Fantastic colours and awesome clarity...

It needed calibration when first bought like most of the others discussed here to get the best out of it.

Issues:

A little backlight bleed on a black background.

Occasional corruption when switching between inputs (fixed with a quick off / on).

Also the scaler means I occasionally get pwned by the CRT and TN boys in an online fragfest but since I use most of the inputs regularly I can live with that ;)

If I did not use most of the inputs I would probably go with the LG version...

Looks like the flickering problem on my Samsung 305T Plus has been resolved.. :D

Yesterday I accidentally left the monitor on (in stand by mode) after I had turned the computer off for a few hours, and when I turned the computer back on, the flickering had vanished

It's now been almost a day since that time, and there's still no flickering.

I haven't opened the box for my HP ZR24W yet, but if the flickering problem doesn't come back in the next few days, I'm returning it, and cancelling my repair order to Samsung.

Of course now I probably won't ever turn my monitor off again. I'll just let it idle in stand by, since it only uses 2w.

Yes I just had my power supply on my Viewsonic VP2030B (amazing monitor) go bad, it was taking over 5 minutes to power up. $1.96 later for 11 brand new capacitors and now its works fine and looks great with no problems.

Monitors do die, but if your willing to solder then you can fix a bulk of the issues fairly cheap.

-----
as I told my father when we took the monitor apart. its already not working, worst case I loose $2 and the monitor still don't work when we are done.

The issues with my monitor weren't like that at all.. My monitor merely had some vertical lines that would flicker. It never turned off or anything.

Anyway, the problem returned unfortunately, so I had to send it to Samsung for repair. Hopefully I'll get it back early next week.

So, my wife is onboard with us getting a 30" display (I needed her buy-in otherwise no cigar). Im just waiting on a good deal from Dell before I pull the trigger on a U3011. Im in no rush, my NEC 90GX2 has worked flawlessly for years. I can wait, not too long though, for a better sale from Dell.

has there been a trusted review that reviewed, say, a 3007wfphc a 305t and a u3011 against each others?

U3011 has better colours, 3007WFP-HC has less input lag, but has a slightly (8ms vs 7ms) slower matrix. I would not consider 305T at this point.

I've been using my U3011 for about two weeks now and I am pleased! I've owned a bunch of different monitors and this was a move up from a U2410. Using an EVGA GTX 580 and this is nice!

Great thread.

Really this is the last thing I could see as a beneficial upgrade to my system, coming from my u2211h ultra sharp (which I love) but the 2560x1600 or 1440 would just be awesome for gaming. Not sure about all that 30" for gaming though, to much screen real estate to be scanning with your eyes.

Personally I did 19 -> 21 -> 24 -> 30 (went dual monitor as soon as I bought my 2nd one and just kept replacing the smaller one) and I can tell you that it is the upgrade that you'll enjoy the most of out everything, except if you're switching from a 5400rpm hdd to a ssd.

As for the extra scanning, I often find myself looking all around my screen without having to use my mouse to pan around as much. This is good because it helps relax my mouse hand more often. This is just one of the advantages of having more pixels to look at.
