i'm working on a computer with a 300 Mhz P2, 196 MB ram, 10GB hard drive, and its running windows 2000 pro. It gets lots of weird errors, like when saving a picture that you have edited, the picture will be torn at the bottom, or distorted. It has weird random reboots, stuff crashes and some stuff just wount run. I'm kinda leaning towards the machine not beeing fast enough to run the programs and the OS, what do you guys think?

oh yeah, forgot to say, the page file on boot is around 80MB, and cpu usage at idle is good, and there are only 20 processes at bootup also.

Personally I won't run anything newer then 98SE on anything slower than a P3 500, Really not much help to you other than saying the system would be much better off on 98, or 98SE.

Heh - with the right tune you can run Win2k/XP on some pretty slow machines.

I have an, ahem!, frugal boss. ALL the PC's in our office are returns from customers due to some problem or another. I just finished installing a PII300 rig, running XPSP1. Add enough memory and strip out all the fluff so it looks like Win2k or 98SE and it does a fine job. No speed daemon but OK for word processing and web surfing.

I'd say you have an incipient hardware failure issue, or possibly overheating.

Agreed, but for the time invested kind of pointless, P3 500ish machines are almost free anyway aren't they? I guess for the ultimate cheapskate that wants no investment;)

ive had windows 2000 running on a 200mhz mmx machine with 40 mb of ram for the longest time now. it can't do much more than type and go online, but it does fine.

I'd have to have it's something on the mobo or hdd is more than likely the culprit. W2K will run on anything with at least 128mb of ram. I've got several P200 duallies running on w2k pro and a couple p// 266s and such running on XP pro. They do just fine. The P200 duallies even run quick enough to manage to turn in wu's for F@H within their time allotment. :)

I got win2k pro on a k6-2 300 and it works great. No speed decrease from win98 and its more stable too.

Providing you have enough ram you should be ok to run it on that spec PC... from the problems you have been having it sounds like you may have a ram fault... or the OS is just hozed and needs a reinstall.

I used to beta test Windows 2000 Professional on my old P200 Toshiba laptop back in the day.

It ran just fine.:)
