need quick help, 60% cpu usage not running any apps.

I noticed my system was VERY sluggish all of a sudden so i looked at my task manager and it is showing a constant 55-70% cpu usage. But, if you look at the processes running there are no processes using any cpu cycles. system idle process is at 99%.
A few hours ago i ran 3dmark 2001 and scored 19.5k but with watever is running in the background i just got 6000...lol how can i find out what is running if it doesnt show up as a process?

Check out the msconfig utility and see what loads at startup. Disable anything you don't recognize/need.

It also wouldn't hurt to give the system a good scanning with an up-to-date virus scanner.

Also, don't forget to shutdown/disable any services you're sure you're not using.:)

Run Spybot and Ad-Aware 6 along with AVG 6. Make sure you update them first.

Check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/ Run and all the other run keys for garbage that doesn't belong, then check in the same spot under HKEY_LOCAL_USER.
