Mysterious oil on new EK top

Hello,

I recently received the (single) rev 2 Laing D5 top from EK. However, when it was time to assemble the thing, I found there was a foul smelling oily coating on the top. It was also around the outside.

I simply washed it off with distilled water. Will this be sufficient? I'm assuming it was simply some kind of preservation oil.

Actually my D5 top from Ek had some oil too. cant remember for sure anymore what I did with it but would be interested to hear what it was all about :)
