I found a nice set of sony APM speakers in a dumpster and was wondering if i could hook these up to anything other than a home theater receiver

yes, an amplifier. You could technically hook it up to a PC jack, but you would likely hear very little or nothing at all. They need to be amp driven, unlike typical unpowered pc speakers which are very low wattage.

Lol, would be awesome to put those in a car or truck with square kicker subs so you've got all square drivers :)

A Cheap T amp would work, but you are only talking ~5W RMS/15W peak from the dayton one at parts-express. Pyle makes a few decent(for the price) stereo amplifiers that could be used with those speakers as well.

I'd watch ebay for cheap stereo receivers, can snag some pretty good deals on them once in awhile.
