View Full Version : need advice on high flow block for 5970

first off, my rig is in the sig :)

i have a mist water cooling set on order, parts can be seen in this link:http://www.microplex.no/Avdelinger/Datakomponenter/Kjøling/Kjøling,_vann/Komplette_sett,_intern/MIST-HighPerformance-vksett,-Dual-Radfor-775_1156_1366-40304.aspx

now i could use a gpu block for my xfx 5970, that does not restrict the flow (too much).

also; do i need another radiator if i throw my gpu in the loop, if so what size is needed?

most if not all full covered gpu blocks will not restrict the flow much, and yes you most definitely need at lest another 240 rad for the 5970 .

a 240 radiator is noted.
the shop where i orderd my water cooling setup did discurage me from ordering the aqua computer block as seen here: http://shop.aquacomputer.de/product_info.php?language=en&products_id=2409

now, danger den is supposedly a high flow full cover block, but where i live (Norway) there seem to be no local dealers :/

My setup is pretty similar to yours. I'm using the XSPC full cover which works out pretty well for me. At 900MHz and 1.157v my idle temp is around 35c and load to around 50c on Furmark. Its a cheaper and very simple block. Another option is the EK block which most ppl here use. With the EK block you have the option to get the back plate which looks good and seems useful as the ram at the back of the card runs pretty hot and its also part of the reason I couldn't get my ram above 1200MHz.

+1 for EK on the basses of looks :) . all the other FC blocks will preform the same + - 1~2c .

oh boy... this turned out more expensive then i planned :(

but anyway it is orderd, threw in a few more pices, since i have gotten so far:

Did we ever come to a conclusion as to which 5970 block had the best VRM temp performance? Also, how does thee Koolance rev. 2 perform?

id like to ask one more stupid question; when choosing a tim to paste on the gpu, i see a lot of people useing non conductive glue like compunds.

would i go horribly wrong if i use my coollabratory liquid ultra to smear on the cores? as i m taking the cost to liquid cool about everything on my pc, i feel like i am gimping myself by using something like ceramique.

Just make sure it doesn't spread out to sensitive parts around the gpu core :) Can dab some nail polish on the closest resistors if you want to be extra safe

i thought the swiftech 5970 waterblock is supposed to be better performing than the Ek blocks???

i mostly orderd the EK gpu block for the backplate (ramcooling)
but to be honest i did not look at swiftecs solution to cooling the backside of the 5970.

parts have arrived

now, i plan to run this and the swiftec gtx cpu block on one loop, so far i have 1x highflow 240 radiator and a mcp 655 pump, guess i really should get another 240, or maybe even a 320.
i see peope recommending 2 pumps and run seperate loops, but is it possible to run all this with one pump in one loop?

I replaced the Koolance 5970 'original version' with a rev. 2 about two weeks ago, and the VRM temps are much improved, by about 40C. There were definitely areas where the VRMs were not being cooled properly using the original version.

finaly ALL parts have arrived, after miss ordering wrong barb sizes and adding a lot of parts to my original list.

knowing myself this will be a fast and furios assembly with little regards to static electicity and leak testsing, wish me luck til the weekend and x-fingers :)

Is your HD5970 not cold bugged? Windows locks up for me if I drop much below 45C. I had to add an 8800GTS to the loop running F@H 24/7 and keep my radiator fans off in order to keep Windows from locking up. :ROTF:
