At its annual users conference, supercomputer vendor Cray unveiled the XE6 supercomputer, formerly codenamed Baker, which will start shipping in the third quarter. The XE6 features AMD’s Opteron 6100 “Magny-Cours” processors and a new interconnect, Gemini, that will offer tremendous improvement in messaging rates and a three-fold reduction in latency. Cray already has more than $200 million in contracts for the XE6, which can scale to more than 1 million cores.

Wow, up to 1 million cores is 83k 12 core CPUs. That is just insane. They say they are shipping to a nuclear research center, I hope it will be nuclear powered.

I wish I had a motherboard that supports quad channel memory, that would be pure win. 8 DIMM sockets = WIN

Let's see 8334 processors on quad socket boards that's 2084 boards and you can please equip them with 2084 Radeon 5870 in X-Fire mode and ship it by Fed-Ex Overnight to my Ranch.

thanks.

I seriously ended up on the floor laughing my ass off.... If you push the news link you see that the first one to comment the gemini say:

"1000000 cores
Yeah, but will it run Crysis ?"

you should pull some strings at cray and get them to make a giant larrabee style gpu out of this thing.

The challenge I see with Larabee is that it is using x86-style technology to try to solve GPU-style problems. All the x86 cores in the world won't help that. I am sure that there will be places that it can shine, but in my mind they are solving the problem in the wrong way. But, then again, we all have our different opinions.

I have plenty of opinions, but I try to keep them in check.
