GF104 will be the first fresh graphics circuit of Nvidia's Fermi family. The GF100 GPU found in the GeForce GTX 400 series house 512 CUDA processors through 16 multiprocessor clusters. GeForce GTX 480 uses 15 of these for 480 CUDA processors and little brother GTX 470 settles for 14 clusters and 448 CUDA processors.(Edited) Even if you shut down parts of the circuit the transistors are still there and result in high manufacturing costs, and makes the chip unnecessarily complicated. With GF104 wee how Nvidia makes changes on the transistor level with GeForce Fermi.

With 8 multiprocessor clusters and 256 CUDA processors the circuits becomes less complicated and a lot cheaper to manufacture. According to our sources the CUDA processors has been optimized for the rendering portion of the chip.

Beside reducing performance Nvidia cuts GF100 more or less in half and this has a lot of positive side effects. The circuit becomes cheaper to make and the power consumption easier to handle. Thanks to 40 nanometer technology and a less complicated GPU the frequencies can be boosted a lot higher than with GF100. According sources GF104 will be capable of 900 MHz and up when overclocking, and even if we don't expect these kind of clocks from factory it bodes well for overclockers wanting to take a swing at Nvidia's new card........

Not too surprising considering how well GTX470/480 scales when they aren't thermally limited. Wonder where they'll be priced.. hopefully NVIDIA is smart about this.

i would assume 192bit since its half a gf100, i was expecting a 2/3 the gf100 part but this should be good. i would expect it to beat a 465 and be the crunchers dream.

if they did this with a 12cluster part i would expect it to be the fastest part that they have.

its a little strange for this to come out the same day as the 480m announcement as this would be incomprehensibly better for a mobile part.

Sounds like they are slicing the chip in half, and removing all transistors too, practically.
The manufacturing cost would become much cheaper, but this is going to become a low-end, or in the best fall a mid-range chip.

Well, it would pretty much have to be if it's name GTX460. Of course, that's just assuming logical naming conventions; I remember the whole Radeon 9500 vs 9600 debacle.

its not, but they could clock it higher than the gf100 srock or on air since it wont be heat or power limited.

The TDP of 130W if it is true is very good, than a dual-chip card GTX 490 may still under 300W TDP .... 280-290?
Or they will raise the voltage to achieve higher frecuencys to 900Mhz core , to beat 5970?
Anyway if they succesed to do a GF104 card almost qual to GTX 470 with lower power consumption and heat and a GTX 490 better than 5970....Than GTX 470 and GTX 480 will die after 3-4 months.

GTX 480 performs quite well with highers clocks and voltage under water i reckon GF104's will not clock a lot under water like the GF100's do.

In single core avatars these will perform like a GTX 470 which is not that great after all it is the GTX 470's overclockable nature that pleases everyone and again i dont expect the GF104's to be very overclock friendly.

The taught of GTX 490 does excite me, tough a full 512 SP GF100 would also be a welcome site and a good "single core" alternative to a GTX 490.

its not, but they could clock it higher than the gf100 srock or on air since it wont be heat or power limited.yeah but 470s and 480s clock how high on air? around 800mhz at least right? thats with the stock heatsink... so gf104 will clock 100mhz higher, thats not that much... its just what youd expect from less heat, so the architecture is not tweaked to clock higher, its just running cooler which means it can clock higher... but a properly cooled gf100 will probably clock as high as a gf104, and have plenty of extra sps...
thats what i mean, the article kinda sounds like it will clock higher as in the arch has been revamped to clock higher... that doesnt seem to be the case...



Anyway if they succesed to do a GF104 card almost qual to GTX 470 with lower power consumption and heat and a GTX 490 better than 5970....Than GTX 470 and GTX 480 will die after 3-4 months.more like 1-2 weeks, since they will be announced at computex and if these specs are true, NOBODY in their right mind will buy a gf100 based card... and the ones that just did will probably regret it...

GTX 490 with dual GF104 GPUs
Geforce GTX 490 looks to be the name of Nvidia's first multi-GPU card sporting Fermi circuits. it was just a matter of time before Nvidia would release dual Fermi GPU, but it took some time before it decided exactly which GPUs to use. Reliable sources have informed us that the card that will be sold as Geforce GTX 490 will use the same GPUs as the coming mid-range segment, I.e. GF104.

The same sources earlier revealed that GF104 will house 256 CUDA processors and 256-bit memory bus. The remaining specifications for Geforce GTX 490 were not revealed, but previous rumors of 375W power consumption doesn't quite apply here.

We hope to learn more about Nvidia's coming products soon, but it looks like the first multi-GPU solution will use the stripped down GF104 GPU, which is relatively understandable considering the power consumption and heat development of GF100.

That retangular die is still too big and if these numbers are real it's nothing to write home about. It's actually massive for the segment they are aiming for. WTF is going on at Nvidia? I want them back, I want better performance AND lower prices from both Nvidia and ATI.
