Find it odd that the higher resolution is not available on HDMI output. But it works on D-DVI ...why?

Videocard is the 5870

I don't think HDMI even the 1.3 has enough bandwidth to drive that resolution even though it's listed as support 2560x1600. Anyway I found this and thought it could be helpful to you.

DVI Single Link uses 19 pins and supports up to 1920x1200 at 60Hz, but is not fast enough to support 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 at 60Hz, or 1680x1050 at 120Hz.

DVI Dual Link adds 6 more pins to the original 19 to support 2560x1600 and 2560x1440 at 60Hz, and 1920x1080 at 120Hz. (Higher resolutions and Hz are irrelevant at this time because no monitors offer them and probably will not for a very long time, if ever.)

HDMI uses the same 19 pins as DVI Single Link for video (plus other pins for audio), but is able to support the higher resolutions and Hz through those 19 pins.

HDMI is able to pass DVI Single Link through its 19 video pins, making conversion extremely simple with no data loss. However, HDMI is not able to pass DVI Dual Link through because it has no way of passing through the extra 6 pins that DVI Dual Link requires. Therefore, when using an HDMI->DVI cable, you will have the same resolution and Hz restrictions as DVI Single Link.

Look like your option is only DVI-D then.

u could do it at 50, 30 or 24hz over HDMI (not sure on 50 but i think it will do it), u are just over the single link resolution so u would need the HDMI for 3d tvs or some hack of sorts. what display and are u using the 10.4 drivers that updated HDMI high resolution support.

and dual link dvi dose 1920x1200 @120hz as its max 120hz not 1080p as the quote above makes it seam

Interesting, thanks for the information guys. I'll stick with the DVI Dual...I never new that HDMI had such limitations.

Cheers

it doesnt have the limitations if you use an HDMI plug, only if you use a DVI to HDMI adaptor.

I was using an HDMI to HDMI....from the monitor to the 5870 HDMI outpu.

Then you may be limited due to a poor cable or a setting in your display drivers.
